Re: 1991 350 Headers Install

are you putting on heads or headers?? lil confused with your post...headers are easy...just use a socket and a lot of penetrating lube, and make sure you got more gaskets...its pretty straight forward...you might have to get some stuff outta your way to get in there...just have patience and time, and you should be arlight......your back might be a bit sore after too, its just perks of the job..once you get into the project, and you have a question..just post again somebody will help ya out...

i just put in new header gaskets on mine...i got a vette motor i don't know if its the same setup as yours but i know for the front bolt on one of sides you gotta take apart the AC braket and what not, well atleast i did because i didn't find a better way..but you'll have to wrestle those things into position because its kinda a tight fit..are they shorty's or long tubes? somebody on here can probably give you a step by step procedure, or otherwise do a search on thirdgen.org or something..

Re: 1991 350 Headers Install

I have them on my 91 1LE 350. Get them ceramic coated first cause it helps with heat reduction as well as they look alot better. Buy a starter blanket too cause the headers can play holy hell with the solonoid. I removed my air pump...really easy....2 conectors under the plastic cover, two torx bolts from the front into the tensioner bracket assembly. Drop the y pipe...((need to get it moddified anyways)) unbolt the old manifolds, install new shorty plugs while the manifolds off. Id also recommend getting a set of universal cut to fit ignition wires and run them under the headers rather than to try to go over the top. Ive burnt out a few wires before I did the under header kit. It can be done over the top but under is how I went. I also added Taylor boot protectors to help with the heat issues. I also (( I know Ill get flamed for this )) unbolted the tranny mount and pulled the bolts from the engine mounts and put a 2"x6" under the pan and lifted the motor 2" or so. I lowered the headers into place and bolted them up. Id also recommend those aluminum multi layer crush style gaskets. Ive reused them about 5 times and still no leaks. Also use some new header bolts. These headers make it real fun to change the plugs but thats all part of the game! I went and had my buddies shop fabricate and modify the Ypipe. But before you do go run up and down the street and **** the neighbors off!!! That way later on they wont complain how loud your car is with the exhaust buttoned up. Good luck. Let us know the results.

Re: 1991 350 Headers Install

Great post - I'm looking at Edelbrock Headers too for my 88 305TPI and have a million questions - hopefully you guys can help. First, are 1 5/8" headers too big for a 305TPI automatic (small cam)? I only have bolt-ons, not planning any cam or head work anytime soon. Would 1 1/2" be better? Does anyone even make those size?

Does the Edelbrock header kit come with a Y-pipe? If not, I'll be looking into Heddman's because they come with a Y-pipe and are about the same price. Has anyone seen or used those new Heddman "Tork-step" headers...they start out as 1 1/2" and go to 1 5/8". Do header sets come with gaskets and bolts or are those separate? Last, does everything bolt together (header to Y-pipe to Cat) or is welding required?

I also want to upgrade the cat, Anyone using Catco? How much does that cost? Do we have 2 or 3 way cats? Any special emissions provisions I need to specify when ordering a cat? I'm staying 100% emissions compliant. Thanks for any and all input. Take care...

Re: 1991 350 Headers Install

I would avoid buying Edelbrocks. The only issues Ive had and am sure everyone else has had with these are 1) access to plugs is more difficult and 2) routing of plug wires. I was actually just looking at SLPs in a picture and it seems they do not have these problems. It appears the air injection tubes are thinner and less obstructive as well as the passanger side cylinder #2 exhaust pipe is run down rather than across #4,#6 and #8 cylinders allowing easy wire routing. As for performance and quality......I really dont know except that Im happy with both on the Edelbrocks. Im sure there are other headers that perform better etc. but if thats what you have then work with them. Would I buy them again?....probably not just for the simple fact that they are more awkward to work around than other brands.
