1988 formula ws6 m5
1988 formula ws6 m5
is the 305 in my 88 formula the same engine that GM put in the 88 z28? i think its the l03 but im not sure, and i know its TPI. im asking this because the engine in my formula was rebuilt last year but the car was just totaled. a friend of mine is selling me a 1988 iroc with a 5 speed and a tpi 305, but the motor is blown. so if these engines are the same is it an easy swap?
If you have an '88 305 and he had an '88 305 and they were both TPI motors, then yes, they are the same. The actual TPI systems may be slightly different, i.e. one may be speed density and the other may use a mass airflow sensor, but the actual longblock is the same.
The fuel injection controller also has some issues in terms of calibration if your car was a T5 and the donor car is a 700R4. You'll need to update the memcal. In addition, I think the Pontiac used an electronic speed sensor whereas the Chevy used a speedometer cable, so you might need to swap some parts at the tailshaft if you switch transmissions.
