Lightbulb 1987 IROC Scoggin Dickey Vortec 360 hp crate engine project

I just ordered the Scoggin Dickey Vortec crate 360H.P. engine. It will be at the shop on the 28th of November 2005. My car is a 87 stock IROC L98. I also ordered 52mm BBK TB, 80 series Flowmaster muffler, SLP runners, BBK Adj. fuel pressure reg., 24# injectors, Hypertech stage 2 chip, NG3 spark plugs, Summit 8mm wires, Edelbrock ceramic coated headers, underdrive pulleys, and K&N airfilter. I already put on the muffler, K&N filters, and chip. I will port match the plenum to the TB and runners. Has anyone ever done a combo like this? If so what were the performance numbers? I'm pretty new a modifications and did a lot of research to try to build a good combo. I'll know first hand in a couple of weeks how it will perform and how tough it is to get the parts all together. I'm pretty much only worried about the headers. I've heard they never fit right. I'll fill you all in hopefully around December 15th 2005. This so far has cost me $5500. I hope it works out. I plan on rebuilding my 700r4 in spring of 2006. Only due to the power increase. It is in great condition for now. I'll just take it easy til then.

It looks like you will need a custom chip made for the ECM.

So does anyone know who can customize my chip? Can I just get my stock chip re-burned?

No...Your car may run with the hypercrap stage II but that will be about.

Be sure to get the Vortec TPI Intake base also. A Stock TPI base will not bolt to a Vortec head. Sounds like a plan! Goodluck!

Re: 1987 IROC Scoggin Dickey Vortec 360 hp crate engine project

The hypertech chip is basicaly a waste of money IMO. The next best thing is to have ED Wright set you up with a custom chip. It will run you about $350 for it though and it will NOT be perfect. Head over to fastchip.com for more details. If the Hypertech chip is the only way to go for you right now then thats fine. Run the car like that and see how she performs. Just make sure you have the proper air/fuel ratio. You dont want it running to lean or rich. Get the engine running and throw it on a dyno and do a few part throttle runs to get things dialed in like the timing and fuel pressure.

You will need a few more things to complete your project. Gaskets will be needed for the TPI system and exhaust system. If it where me, I would throw on a new water pump while things are apart. That is, only if yours is old. Also, I would also replace any old sensors on the engine. I highly recommend NOT getting cheap Auto Zone sensors. Especially the O2 sensor. Actauly I have a GM Ac Delco O2 sensor for sale brand new. its part number 25162693. if it fits your application and you need it, then let me know. I will sell it for about $30 to ya.

Let us all know how you make out with that crate engine when its done and good luck along the way.

Cool Re: 1987 IROC Scoggin Dickey Vortec 360 hp crate engine project

My engine was delivered to the shop this morning. I'm going to work on the Chip issue ASAP. I'll check out fastchip.com. Thanks BOTTLEDZ28. The motor comes with the Vortec baseplate already installed. Good deal for $3600. I'm taking the car to the shop in the morning. I'm having the plenum ported to match the SLP runners and BBK throttle body. I was thinking about having the plenum and runners polished to look chrome. Does anyone know if this will create a rust problem after a few months? What extra care will these parts need if I do get them polished? I'll keep you all posted if we run into any problems with any parts not fitting without fabrications being made. Everything I ordered, even the headers, are supposed to be a direct fit without and mods for the TPI motor. So we'll soon know. If the results are good and the car runs perfect I'll post all the part #'s and where I got them. Pretty much from Summit and Scoggin so far. I'll let ya'll know when the project will be expected to be complete Tues night. Thanks for the replies so far.

Cool. I'll check out the piggy back. I recently saw an ad for something about that but didn't really know it would pertain to me. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Re: 1987 IROC Scoggin Dickey Vortec 360 hp crate engine project

I had hypertech burn me a custom chip they said it takes a few days to make and I should have it by the end of the week. I got the chip the next day and the stock chip worked better then it. I dont know if they sent me an off the shelf chip or what. They said something is wrong with my car not the chip. So i called ED Wright. He sent me a chip and it worked great, as far as I can tell as least. Sent the Hypertech chip back with a restock charge.

Aluminum doesn't rust. Extra care would be polishing every now and then. It gets old. I have fallen to the paint/powdercoat area and don't dig polishing anymore.

Ed Wright is the only way I'd go as far as mail order. I don't think TPIS, Jet, or Hypertech have ever seen how bad their products are in real life. They make them sound great on paper though. Goodluck!

Re: 1987 IROC Scoggin Dickey Vortec 360 hp crate engine project

I thought pcmsforless only did OBD ECM's?If not then that is another company to consider. I have heard that name a lot around the boards. I would highly reccommend NOT polishing the runners or TB. You wil be sorry after a while when you cant get al the little nooks and crannys polished on the runners after it is installed. I say leave the runners in the cast finish that they are in now or send them out to be powdercoated or throw come rattle can paint on there.

I just sent PCMforless an e-mail. Sounds like it might work out.
