Yes there are "a few guys" that have built up a crossfire motor. The majority were unsuccessful. The CFI is a crappy setup and it's very restrictive. You would be better off heading in a different direction with modifications.

"Crossfire Hood"

I understand ....that the crossfire was NOT one of GM's better ideas...( THIS is gonna sound really STUPID...) Can't remember ( and its too early in the AM to pull out any of the books)...But, i have the hood where the hood doors/vents actually are functional and open up when one gets his foot into the gas pedal and....I'd truely like to keep that set-up !! Was thinking of rebuilding the throttle bodies, cam and little "better" exhaust system to make it a little FUNNER ( is that really a WORD??) CAR.
Just hopin to get some ideas on givin a Crossfire some more *****!

There was a guy on TGO who disassembled the intake manifold and opened up the runners and got some pretty good gains from it. Do a search on Thirdgen.org

At one point I flirted with the idea of doing a crossfire car just because I owned a few TPI Trans Ams and wanted something a little different.

I've got an '83 Crossfire as well. First thing first - check for vacuum leaks, especially between the top plate and lower intake. Check and tighten all of those bolts, even the TB bolts.

Go to TGO and do a search, you'll find a ton of info. Also check out this place. http://www.crossfire.homeip.net/

Keep the hood and the vacuum actuator setup. You can easily make it work with any carb - which in the long run is a much better route.

Personally, I don't think he should carb it. CFI's are getting so rare he should keep it.

Is CFI the ideal possible set up for ultimate power? No. But it's not nearly as bad as those who don't understand them make them out to be, they are also rare, look exotic and more than afew guys have gotten their's into the 12's with great driveability.

And the functional hood is also a nice touch.

I agree. I'd go with a set of performance heads designed for the 305, and a cam to improve low and mid range power and work with the EFI. Maybe improve the rear gearing too.
