2011 SS Shakes!

Long story short, I got a nail in my rear pass tire, went to goodyear, had them patch it, now at 75 + mph the car shakes! not too bad, but its definitely there..
I was thinking its probably out of balance, but all it was, was a patch job ...
What do you guys think? thx

Get it rebalanced, a weight may have fallen off since the work was done.

If that doesn't do it, consider getting a new tire as it may be unsafe.

Better to have the new tire kill you financially than the old tire kill you literally!

So for lunch I went back to goodyear, and sure enough it was off balance, so they rebalanced it, we'll see how it feels on my drive home.

I'm with Jason on this. My 2011 SS doesn't shake AT ALL. In fact, I have to be extremely careful when not using cruise control on the highway. At times when the road's not too congested I look down at the speedometer, which I keep on digital display, and find myself going 82-85 MPH. It's SO SMOOTH it gets away from me at times.

My guess is that you threw a weight. Get it checked as your tire is taking a beating.

Edit: Ah...OK. I didn't read the rest of the thread before responding. Glad to see that all is well and you are safe!

Re: 2011 SS Shakes!

FWIW, I would never take my business to that shop in the future.

When I was in college and worked p/t as a pump block attendant for a local service station, if we removed the tire from the rim to do a "patch" we would always re-balance the wheel/tire after remounting. It was a given. The tire almost never remounts the exact way it was prior to removal and re-balancing should be mandatory in most reputable shops. It sounds like they were cutting corners.

I have a screw in my drivers rear and it has been there since last fall. Luckily I have tire warranty so it saves me the $600 the rear tire costs. Tire is not leaking air so dealership does not think its punctured. Here's hopin they pull the screw and the tire is fine.

Also maybe loosen the wheel and torque the lugs - see if that helps. I've had garages screw that up good.

Still might be an issue. If the screw penetrated deep enough into the tire to expose the belt package but not enough to penetrate the inner liner its still a problem since it exposes the belt package to the environment and that might result in a failure down the road. As a rule of thumb just about any penetration in the grooves on the tread area should be suspect and any penetration in the tread block deeper than 2/32nd's should also be suspect. Granted this means nearly all penetrations into the tire will be cause for inspection (and by inspection I mean disassemble the tire assembly) and repair but the only way to ensure a tire is safe is to completely seal the tire inside and out using a rubber plug and a patch adhereing to proper manufacturer (usually RMA compliant) repair standards.

This may or may not void the speed rating on the tire as well as it depends on the tire manufacturer's guidelines.

Fortunately tires are ruggedly over engineered and catstrophic results are relatively low (the industry also keeps a lid on this stuff since its been a field day for tort lawyers) unfotunately its created a situation where drivers and tire techs take them for granted.
