I just brought my baby in for it's second oil leak. First one was at the oil cooler (gasket or seal....had to order parts)...now the rear main cover (GM TSB on all 6.2L in all GM stores now)...there is porosity problems in the cover and they are replacing rear main seal and cover. Exhaust, drive shaft, and transmission are being pulled to get to Cover and main seal. Keep an eye on your garage floors....

 

Well that's no fun! I haven't heard much about frequent oil leaks so far. Keep us posted!

 

for sure Jason.... I just got her back ...2 days in shop....seems the same...no rattles or changes in the way it shifts....I will monitor for leaks and see if it crops up again. 10 hr warranty job so dealer was pleased !!

 

I have often said that GM's problem is they spend way too much time and money constanly redesigning and re-tooling their products every year, Isn't this LS3 engine the same one they have been using on Corvette and Tahoes for the past 5 years or so?? and what is different with the L99?? is one for the SS and one for the base?

Let me guess, they totally redesigned the engines just for the camaro and nothing else?

I mean, look at Ford, they are still using the 4.6 in Mustang and probably a lot has stayed the same for 20 years

 

the ls3 isnt in the tahoe. and what do you mean about one for the ss and one for the base???? the l99 is for the automatic and the ls3 is for the manual SS no matter the trim level.

 

The L99 has variable valve timing, active fuel management, and a different cam.

No. The L99 is used in the A6, the LS3 is in the M6. As for reasons why the L99 is used in the A6..... I don't know... maybe to improve fuel economy?

 

Update. drove car to North Carolina and back (13 hrs each way)...and local driving and so far so good. NO new leaks so I think they fixed it. No worries at this time. gets faster every day !!! Still love er like my first born child....

I have a 2010 L99 with 3600 miles on it that had an oil leak on a oil cooler gasket. It was a $30.00 repair. Haven't had it out of the shop long enough to know for sure that the leak is in fact fixed, we will see.

Corvette, yes. Tahoe, no. (LS3, that is; the 6.2L base engine is used in trucks / suvs as well as Corvette and Camaro). And no, the engine didn't get a redesign to go in the Camaro. They don't constantly redesign / retool their products every year.

Porosity issues are a materials problem. When that happens, basically, something in the metal / alloy mix isn't quite up to snuff at the casting plant (GM or supplier). So a batch of a particular part (like a rear cover) can end up having tiny flaws in the structure that can actually let fluid seep through over time. Though this is the first I've heard of this particular issue, it sounds like a quality control problem with the materials / casting process, but it isn't because the LS3 was "redesigned" for the Camaro. 426HPSS mentioned a TSB that covers all 6.2L engines, which would therefore include the Vette and some trucks.

Also, Mustang has moved from the 4.6L to the 5.0L. It was a complete redesign. The 4.6L came out in ~'96 (in the Mustang) and saw many changes over the years (2V, 3V, and 4V heads, SOHC and DOHC, supercharging, etc.).
