I've heard it's going to be a Northstar based V8. This doesn't make me to happy with the probs Caddy has with'em. We'll see.

Well, I have no GM insider sources to back me up, but I am can say with a pretty high level of certainty that a Northstar v8 will not power any trim of Camaro. I would be shocked and sort of disappointed if this happened.

Agreed, theres no way that anything related to Northstar will be in a Camaro V8 wise. The only type of V8 engine that the Camaro will see will be LSx based.

I just can't see a Northstar making it under the hood. Hopefully all it was that you heard was a rumor. I'm from the LT1 camp, and I love them, but I know that the LSx series is superior(Jury is still out on what I think of the LS1, though....but that doesn't matter anymore). I was hoping for a trim level with the LS7, but that looks like a pipe dream. All the talk I hear is LS3/LS9.

It's hard to say what motors it will use when none of them are in production yet.

I took this from another board, but it was suppossedly taken from Motor Trend.
"In the July 2006 edition of Motor Trend, they reported the Camaro had been greenlit for the 2009 model year. Currently no other publication has confirmed this and GM themselves have not said either way. Along with those claims, Motor Trend has also said the Camaro will use the Cadillac Escalade V8 for the base V8 model and that the convertible Camaro has also been greenlit for release at the end of 2009."
I really hope this is untrue.

First of all, Motor Trend is seldom totally accurate. Second of all, the Escalade does not use a Northstar style engine.

Re: what engine? 2009 at earliest?

With my budget, lol I've never been in the market for a Caddy so never looked into their engines. The forum I took the info from seemed to think that they were running the Nortstar. I wouldn't think they(Chevy) would give up on the LS engines, that wouldn't be cost effective for them would it! Seems I did here somewhere that it was an LS based engine, don't know why I didn't think of that on the other group.

Northstar is too expensive of an engine for the camaro.

The V8 that is currently in the Escolade is the 6.2L Vortec V8. That might be a canidate, since GM is putting this engine in the trucks as well. Correct me if i'm wrong but the more they build the cheaper the engine is to manufacture, right? If so i'll add this to my list of potential base V8's but then again I could be wrong.

My guess:

V6: 3.9L 230 HP, 240 Torque (Same one used in Impala)

Z28: LS2 375-400 HP, 375-400 Torque (I could see GM factory underrating it, ofcoarse not to tread on the base Corvette)

SS: LS7 450 HP, 450ish Torque (Detuned or also factory underrated)

Re: what engine? 2009 at earliest?

By that time the Z06 will probably be pushed to a higher HP along with the regular Vette. So I'm gonna wish for 450 for the Z28 and 500 for an SS. They might give 10-20 less than what the vette gets.

I think the V8 options will be a little more stout by then. The LS2 and the LS7 will both most likely be gone by then. I think we are looking more towards seeing either an N/A 6.2L and a supercharged 6.2L in the base and top models or a low boost, non-intercooled 6.2L and a low boost, intercooled 6.2L as the two engines. All of this is speculation of course and most of these rumors I have gotten from this board and elsewhere.

On a side note has anyone seen the pictures of the LSA in the latest GMHTP? I can say that I am definately not a fan of the supercharger design. With the length of the runners from the intercooler to the cylinder heads I can't help but think of the 3rd gen. TPI (lots of torque but limited rpms.) I also see this design being very hard to modify or upgrade. Honestly, it looks a bit over engineered to me. Maybe someone could enlighten me of the benefits of this design. Still the fact that I see an LS motor with a blower makes me giddy!

The days of factory underated power are probably over, I believe GM and almost every other manufacturer now uses the new SAE or whatever it is called standard and every car engine has to go thru it, look at the Z06, it actually gained 5 hp after the new testing procedures, while Toyota and a lot of the Japanese manufacturers cars actually had lower hp ratings then they were advertising, I think the Camry lost 15 hp or near that! Hopefully they can find a way to underate the motors I just don't see it happening anymore with our "sue happy" society.
