Guys, get the name correct. It is not called a Cobra any more. The formal name is Shelby GT500 and I'll be getting one, replacing my '03 Cobra in the next year or so. Here's another vid:

I'd say this car competes with the '06 Z06 for little over half the cost. Forget about the new Camaro... because GM will never make it as the competition for the Z06.

 

Yikes. the 5th gen has its work cut out if it's going to compete with that. I really really hope it does. Otherwise I will have to seriously look at that GT500.

 

 

i heard the gt500 has a huge mark up on them from the dealer. Plus the cost of all those aftermarket parts. your also not talking about stock cars now keeping up with a stock z06. i don’t know if they will make a camaro to go up against a gt500 but i would say that if they did it wouldn’t be competition for the z06 especially if it gets a new motor before the camaro comes out. also gm isnt going to go well if people modd there camaro it will keep up with a z06 so lets not make a high end camaro.

 

yeah my friend wants the gt500 like no other but as soon as he saw a price tag from someone who bought it he said F' that ill stick with the gt, it was like 102 something it was completly out there, he had some after market headers and exhaust system added that boosted the price but still

 

GT500 is 1-2 tenths slower then a regular corvette new stock vs stock. as far as modded out gt500's running stock Z06's down. what about the turning and stopping? lol that mustang is meant for the track. also its not quite fair compairing a stock car to a fully modified car IMO. Z06 isnt a drag car, its a pure bred sports car that can do everything good and isnt 4000lbs

 

That commercial (available from their web site) was EXTREMELY well done. GM needs a commercial of similar effect for the Camaro......Jason?

 

Think about it, 40k for a Cobra. No thanks. C5 ZO6 with a blower and it can turn to. The Cobra is over rated and overpriced. Plus the C6 ZO6 can turn, not just go straight. If the Cobra was 10k less, I'd think about it. I also think the first commercial on that link sucked and so did the music. WOW, a straight road like always. Let the punishment begin.

 

Prescription for making it to 2009:

1. Watch less TV. I stopped watching several years ago (except for special events like the SuperBowl) and it's amazing to be free!

2. Get yourself a 400HP GTO. I forgot all about the new Stang once I heard the LS2 sing at 6000 RPM

The GT500 that's running 10's has several thousand dollars and many hours in mods.

Give me that much money to mod my Camaro and it'll be running 10's and it'll still handle with composure around a road course.

 

Factor in the GT500 mod list and the added cost of it , then put the crack pipe down .

Stock Z06 will do bottom 11's@125 plus in the quarter on street tires , and make the GT500 look silly on any roadcoarse ya wanna play on .

If you dont think GM will have a answer to the GT500 at a Camaro level , I think your gonna be surprised . "IF" GM can keep the Camaro under 3700 lbs , they wont even need a 500 hp engine to do it .

 

That 40K is for a 4 passenger, limited edition STOCK Ford Mustang GT500 (not called Cobra anymore) that's going to be bought by Mustang fans with extra money in the bank, people who like to take brand new cars to the track & race them without without breaking something, and special car fans. Comparing it to a non stock Z06 is flat out silly.

That stock GT500 will not only out accelerate, but will outhandle and outstop your stock F-body (I'm guessing you actually have one ) by a pretty impressive margin. The GT500 powertrain is also probally the most durable drivetrain you're going to find anywhere. Short of a direct nuclear hit, the engine is darn near indestructable, and capable of running over 600 warranty safe horsepower without any internal changes.

The Z06 is a great Sports Car. It's a 2 seater that puts rich guy supercar performance within the hands of the almost rich guy (or gal).

However, the GT500 is the quickest, most powerful, best stopping, best handling, FOUR SEATER on the planet for anywhere near the price, let alone the only 500 horsepower car you're going to find with 4 seats and a sub 80K pricetag.


I seriously doubt a cold air intake, a Borla system w/ X-pipes, 4.10 gears, and a chip is going to cost several thousands of dollars, let alone make your Camaro run 10s (I left the pulley swap off... the real key to the increase, because Camaros don't have stock blowers, and the pulley swap is very cheap. I did it on my SC Thunderbird).

The car is pretty impressive........ Period.

 

You left off full custom race suspension, ported blower, roll cage, weight reduction, and slicks. Money is money, and I guarantee they've got at least three grand worth of work into the car, and probably closer to five grand. I'll spend mine the way I want -- I didn't say I'd do the same mods.
