The Sound of DOD/AFM
The Sound of DOD/AFM
Since this was a hot topic a month or so ago, I've been working to get a basic recording of my Impala in DoD/AFM mode. Today I think I have an acceptable recording. It isn't the best, but it gets the point across. The first link is a "Audio with video" recording. The second is just the audio of DoD accelerating from 20mph to 35mph. Enjoy!
The DoD/AFM Comparison Video
Beware, it gets loud at first.
DoD/AFM 30mph to 35mph Acceleration
Please note, I can only host these files for about a week at best. I may need to ask that someone mirror them if they prove to be popular.
Thanks. Please let me know your opinions!

WOT sounded horrible to me.
If the car has basically the same setup as the Grand Prix GXP, then the file is not a good representation of what you here inside the car. The GXP has a really impressive, deep throated musclecar sound, IMO. And, truth be told, I wasn't even sure if the GXP we rode in had DoD, because I couldn't tell.
The human ear can hear it, but it is far more subdued. And unless you've driven the car for quite a while (I mean months), you can't discern the differences between V8 an V4 modes inside the car.
Thanks Magnapilot!! I think the stock exhausted cars sound just fine!!! I'm sure GM spent time and money to make the V4 sound unobtrusive.
I'm more concerned with aftermarket mufflers/catbacks.....
My bud just straight piped his Hemi 300C.(Still has cats and I think it has factory resonators) I haven't caught up with him for a ride, yet. Different animal but the same concept.
I'm sure given time you'll have some kind of exhaust put on too. Please give us your opinion then as well. But on the other hand, I heard a stock Impala SS the other day (at least I think it was stock....) and it sounded pretty raspy with the stock pipes!!!

Apparently it just takes some sound engineering to handle the V4 sound. I've read somewhere that GM had to engineer the SS exhaust to handle the different order of sound it produced. I personally think they did really good at making the exhaust both quiet and loudish under WOT.
And like I said, unless you've been around the car for quite a while. Inside the car you can't tell the difference between V4 and V8 modes.
Now I just hope Corsa makes a catback soon... and I'll have some new sounds for you guys.
I'm not really sure why this is so much of a concern. If you want a loud exhaust system and you're serious about performance, you can simply calibrate DoD out so that it never enters deac mode. The thresholds for entering cylinder deac are pretty tight as it is. Pretty much all you will have to do is raise the "vacuum reserve exit" threshold and you'll never get DoD. If you want it back again, just lower the thing back down. Anyone serious about performance should learn to tune anyway, so this is a good motivator to start your education.

I'm thinking of asking to have this post moved just to get to it's intended audience. No one seems to frequent these new '09 Camaro boards since they split it all up.
I haven't had anything major yet. At least not with the engine or tranny combo. Only minor thing I've had so far, is an adjustment to the power windows... but thats all. The LS4 has run great so far, bout to run it over 13K miles in 7 months.
