Word has it that General Motors may be out to finally counter the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. Until now, Ford and Dodge enjoyed nearly unhindered dominance of the turn-key dragster market, but LSXTV is reporting that GM is planning to unveil its answer at this year's SEMA show in November in the form of a Stock Eliminator Chevrolet Camaro. Details are markedly scarce at the moment, but that didn't stop LSXTV from hypothesizing about exactly what the quarter-mile Bowtie could bring to the table.

Chances are the Camaro will come with a serialized nameplate but won't be street-legal, and it will boast a track-specific suspension, brake and chassis package. Even so, as LSXTV points out, the Cobra Jet is feathery light compared to the big-bodied Camaro, so odds are the machine will need more horsepower to get it down the straight ahead of the Ford. That may mean a factory LS7 will be behind the headlights. I REALLY like the idea of chevy putting an LS7 in a camaro.

 

This sounds interesting....

I do like the idea of an LS7 Camaro as well.

 

If we're talking about a drag race (track only) Camaro, why limit it to the LS7 and not either the LSX454 (620hp/590lb-ft) or the ZZ572/720R (720hp/685lb-ft)?

For such a car, the LS7 quite frankly doesn't make sense.

 

Actually, in my original story which Autoblog picked up, I made an educated wild-*** guess that an EFI version of the LSX454R would be a logical choice, too (though the LS7 would be somewhat easier since all that engineering is done already)

i agree...the ls7 isnt the right choice for the drag package.

 

While the LSX454 and ZZ572 would be cool to see, aren't they iron blocks? The LS7 would be a much lighter power plant.

 

It would be ***** to the wall with SLP's blown 427 in a light car with either a 4-link or 4th gen fbody rear suspension.

 

dont alot of drag racers use cast irom blocks? my buddy built his 4th gen with a cast iron block for racing. their heavier but more durable for high hp..
