New Camaros' REAL competitors?

New Camaros' REAL competitors?
We all know the Mustang is the bullseye(or is it? come on now- just being a trouble maker ), but what other cars would you look for the new Camaro to compete w/ directly? And cars that when modded , could the new Camaro compete w/?

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
Challenger is another obvious competitor and, according to the GM Design Clinic photos in another thread, the Infinity G35 and 3 series BMW are also in Camaro's sight.

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
V6 turbo maybe for base mustang, or Z350?
I expected the LS2 Z28 IRS Road racer to be BMW performance focused before the car came back. I also expected the Z350 which they more accurately targeted the G35 4 seater. Maybe a badged 1LE with even stiffer susp, and light weight drive shaft?
I dont expect direct competition as in luxury with those cars, however a Z28 Camaro style that can corner at least near BMW for alot less. The way one Mag compared the GTO to a 70 grand Mercedees calling it 90% of the Mercedees for 50% of the price. This is what Im hoping for.
This does make me think however that a Caddy Zeta car going more directly head to head with BMW with more expensive lighter parts not so far fetched. A CTS coupe type based on a Camaro Zeta plat.
I thought the SS I would like to be focused more 1/4 mile and target Mustang. Maybe a solid rear and slightly lower gears. Also an LS2. Neither car "better" just different in the way I think they were meant.
I thought the ZL1 LS7 would be direct Shelby Mustang competition
Thats the way I would like it to go. Taking on the world with one car.

The Challenger is a pig of a vehicle and will be a few hundred pounds more then the Camaro. No way with that much more weight, and 25 more HP it will be that much faster.

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
GM was telling with their intent of the new Camaro . In those pics of all the prototypes they had large pics marked competition . A Mustang was there , a G35 , and a 3 series BMW coupe . Pretty stellar benchmarks if ya ask me .

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
I don't think it matters what the concept weighed, really, having been made from spare parts and whatnot. It was just to showcase it, not to get every single thing right the very first time.

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
I think Camaro will cover a large range of competitors.
Mustang and Challenger of course
G35 and 3 series, both already mentioned here (G35 for quite some time actually)
The Mitsi Eclipse & Hyundai Tiburon will be crossed shopped coupes from the FWD Japanese market.
Even the Mazda RX-8 should be in the Camaro’s crosshairs

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
There is a significant difference between "benchmarking" a model against models of other manufacturers and identifying a model’s "competitors".
I can easily believe that the G35 and BMW 3 Series was used for benchmarking purposes but I doubt that GM believes that either of those vehicles are competitors with a new Camaro.
There are always exceptions of course and this is just my opinion but I believe that most people who do/will buy a G35 or a BMW 3 simply won’t consider a Camaro (and it has nothing to do with how “good” the Camaro might be).

Re: New Camaros' REAL competitors?
I would really like to see two versions of the new Camaro. One obviously being the traditional performance version, V8, performance options, and a Z28option......
The second, in my opinion, should be a hybrid on the same platform instead of a traditional six cylinder or economy model.
GM has been pushing hybrids lately and they could easily tie their hybrid marketing into the performance vehicle of the future campaign, and market something about a percentage of dollars from the traditional models being allocated for R&D of more efficient technology.
In reality, a great many technological and practical improvements of vehicles havce come from the performance sector and racing arena and by tying the new Camaro to the efficiency, value, and performance, with an option for hybrid technology, GM could easily market the new Camaro to a non-traditional market segment while capuring the traditional budget minded performance market, especially if they did a tie in with American traditions and cross generational enthusiasm.
