Re: The latest word on the Z28 nameplate...

Think "tuned" is a loaded word in this case?

no comment on the z28 then? The z28 was brought out to battle the boss mustang back in the trans am days.

Re: The latest word on the Z28 nameplate...

One must wonder if Chevy changed the blown Camaro from Z-28 (Z/28) ((Z28)) to ZL1 at least partially due to the Boss Mustang?

Interesting, regardless....

Here's another one...

[Comment From Jimmy W Jimmy W: ]
It seems that the only gap left in the Camaro lineup when comparing it to the Ford Mustang is the gap that the Boss 302 fills in Ford's lineup. Any plans to fill that gap in the future?

John Fitz - Camaro Marketing Mgr:
Jimmy W - great question. We continue to look at how we can evolve and improve the Camaro.
This feeds right into my "we get what we want" theory I have been posting lately.

Re: The latest word on the Z28 nameplate...

I for one, am very pleased that this car is called ZL1. The heritage of the Z28 (or Z/28 as it were) is fully intact -- even preserved/restored by this choice. I truly believe a Z28 should be a track-rated-daily-driver that is leaner and meaner than anything we have seen (including the original). IMHO, Ford has laid the groundwork in building the Boss 302. The ZL1 is *not* a competitor to the Boss -- it exceeds that car on many fronts (or at least it should). The Z28 (and you know it's coming) will be a car that I will NOT be able to resist...

...I can't wait.

I agree... but i think the ZL1 will probably be "rarer" over time as gas creeps up etc. Dunno, just me maybe. I think I'll get the ZL1 while the gettin is good!

Just to correct the misinformation from the chat, there was no Boss 302 when Chevrolet brought out the Z/28 in '67, in fact Ford was still running the 289 cid engine. In '68 Ford came out with their "tunnel ram" 302 (I think that was what they called it) that was a complete failure and then did the Boss 302 which was pretty much a blatant copy of the Z/28 302.

Re: The latest word on the Z28 nameplate...

The Z28 will live again, and it seems that it will be what many of us wanted for a very long time. A direct competitor to each Mustang model is a great thing. I hope they get this Z28 right. Good engine, excellent handling/braking, exhaust, bigger tires, weight reduction, front and side splitters, racing stripes, different hood, higher spoiler, etc. We already have our ZR1, now we need a Z06, and to strike up a rivalry with Boss owners.

Well....... Heres the bottom line!

Well heres the real deal.

The ZL1 is/will continue to be the King of the Camaro Hill.
The Z28 is/will continue (soon) to be the road circuit champ but will not outmaneuver the ZL1 prepped for either drag or circuit.

The ZL1 cost in today's dollars.... well..... let's put it this way. Buy a Z28 in 18 months and it will cost you about what a ZL1 does today but will not have the "brute" collector value.

I'm not dissing either. If I had to choose TODAY, it'd probly be a toss up. What we all know, is the Boss 302 will not beat a GT500. Similar with Chevy's entries. I'd go for the ZL1 TODAY. I would not feel their was a stronger option for me if I got the ZL1, but if i got the Z28, I definitely would KNOW their was another factory Camaro that could beat me. Case Closed.

I think that the Z28 will turn out to be very similar to the Jay Leno car. V6TT.

Re: The latest word on the Z28 nameplate...

I'm seeing the ZL1 as the Camaro version of the Z06, not the ZR1. I predict that the Z/28 will be like the Grand Sport. It will blend the lines between the SS & the ZL1. It will use the suspension, wheels, tires, etc from the ZL1, but will retain the drivetrain from the SS. Output will be increased by the use of the exhaust from the ZL1 and maybe some kind of "cold air intake" to reach ~450hp.
