GM wants to buy back 1997 Firebirds?!

I received the following letter today in the mail:

Please review the following information carefully:

McDavid Pontiac Buick GMC of Irving is offering a special market pricing and financing event. Your status as a previous customer qualifies you for this special event.

We need to acquire several pre-owned 1997 Pontiac Firebirds by April 15, 2006 in order to fulfill special manufacturer requests. You have been identified as an owner of one of these vehicles and our new car managers have been authorized to buy back your current vehicle.

We would like you to trade in your current vehicle for any new 2006 Pontiac Buick or GMC. With trade in values at their highest in years, this may be the best time to save thousands of dollars on your next vehicle purchase. We feel confident that with your approved credit, you can make this transaction with little or no money down and a monthly payment that fits your budget.

Josh, bring this letter for admittance to this event and present it to an authorized dealer representative at McDavid Pontiac Buick GMC of Irving.

Please stop by or call us at 1-800-945-6178 during the specified dates and times listed below to schedule a convenient appointment and allow us the opportunity to make you an offer. A visual inspection of your vehicle is required to offer you the highest possible price.

Due to your ownership status, this event will not be advertised to the general public. This will be your only notification.
Perhaps I'm reading into this too much, as it might just be a clever marketing ploy by the dealership. However, it does state that the manufacturer is requesting 1997 Firebirds. I know in the past GM has built show cars and one offs from used F-bodies. I believe there was a yellow LS6 powered Collector's Edition Formula that I read about in a article which was built off a used Firebird that GM bought from a dealership in Texas. The envelope that the letter came in is post marked from zip code 34677, which is in Florida.

I hate to fan the still smoldering Firebird rebirth rumors, but this maybe significant. Perhaps GM is trying to gauge former Firebird owners, or maybe they're using them to underpin test cars? Sort of like the C5 Cormaros.

guionM, Z284ever, etc, any ideas? Or is this just a cleverly disguised dealership gimmick. It's a shame I don't still have my T/A. I wonder what kind of deal they'd be willing to give me on a new GTO.

What the hell would you be able to replace a Firebird with that Pontiac, Buick, or GMC makes?

Maybe GM wants to buy all Firebirds back then smash them. That way everyone will just forget about the Firebird and let it die

That's what I figured, but the wording is deceptive.

Yeah, this whole thing is just to get you into the dealership. I got the same letter offering to buy my Camaro. Makes it sound like they REALLY need your car. Dealerships will do anything to make money.

Its just a dealer marketing gimmack, I bet someone else on your street got one saying the dealer needs there Grand Prix, or Buick Century/Regal, etc. and has been authorized to buy it back

Re: GM wants to buy back 1997 Firebirds?!

If GM wanted Firebirds for a project, they'd just buy them off a used car lot somewhere instead of going through the trouble of contacting you and asking you to trade your car in.

I'm sure its just a form letter that goes out to hundreds of prior customers and is says they need whatever car the customer owns.

Re: GM wants to buy back 1997 Firebirds?!

GM would not buy back cars through a dealership.

When they have a car they want, they contact owners directly.... and more often than not, they dont buy the car, they borrow it, and provide the owner a replacement vehicle to use whiile they have your car.
