Ford and DCXs RWD success.....

Whatever the case, the current GTO is a great-performing car even if it hasn't sold well. When production ends, the performance division of GM will be lacking a model with a V-8 torturing the rear tires for two years. Currently, Ford can't build Mustangs fast enough, Dodge has the Charger and the Magnum on the road, and its Challenger concept is driving everyone crazy, much like the Camaro. As you can see, from a performance standpoint, Pontiac can ill afford not to field a competitive model should all these retro-performers continue to grow in popularity.
This is taken from the post about a possible Trans Am, quote from Autoweek. After reading this article something dawned on me, with some inspiration from an unlikely place, my gf. Now she drives a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V8, loves it. Loves my car, is absolutely in LOVE with the new Charger, (esp the 6.1l hemi version), but cars like the Evo and STi and Celica, etc dont do anything for her. In asking her why, its because she thinks the *** cars look like toys, where as Fords and DCX and my Camaro scream American

Now she isnt a car enthusiast, but just takes an interest in my hobby. However this gave me an idea, for too long GM and Ford and DCX's car lineups tried to emulate Japanese and Euro competitors (another reason y the GTO might not have sold as well as was intended), it was only with pick ups and SUVs (again, a uniquely American design) that kept them going. SO this finally brings me to my point, why is retro so succesfull now? Its not because of a return to someones youthful glory days, its because of a return to the American ideal of cars. With these catagory leading designs (new camaro included) the big 2 1/2 has stirred the American publics imagination again.

We all know that "product, product, product" will be the only way GM and Ford can get out of their current woes, I just hope that forthcoming designs try to emulate the American car and not once again follow down the same path that foreign competitors are taking.

You should be happy then with the heritage styling over the next few years at GM
