Finally Got To See It..

A friend and I were able to get up to NY yesterday for the Autoshow.

I have to say, the Camaro looks even better in person. I'll try to get the pics I took online in a bit. After initially standing there gawking and listening to the presentation I had to go back 2 more times to gawk some more and listen twice more to the presentation. LOL I would have stood there longer, but my friend couldn't care less and was getting tired of looking at it so I had to go.

But I didn't think it looked that long OR wide. I liked it's size to be honest.

I forget, did anyone ever ask how the handles worked to open the door? That's the first thing my friend commented on; how the handles looked like they didn't actually work. So after the woman (Tricia I believe was her name) made her presentation he walked up and asked her how they worked. I'm sure someone in here already answered this, but just in case- you push the rear end of the handle and the front flips out. We got to see her do it a short time later. Interesting.

Here's a couple pics of my ugly mug and my next car.

I also have to admit, seeing the Challenger in person changed my opinion slightly. I still don't think it's anywhere near as good looking as the Camaro, but it's definitely better looking in person than the pics make it out to be.

And I have a question about it. When the Camaro was revealed I know a number of people felt the front was too 'pointy'. Something I completely disagree with, a sporty car should be pointy, but that's beside the point. My question is, why didn't anyone complain about the Challengers frontend being too pointy? The pictures online don't show how much of a point it comes to. I don't think it's any less pointed than the Camaro, they just recessed the grille rather than giving the grille a point too. Here's a couple pics that show what I mean-

How's that any less pointed aside from the grille? I was really surprised to see that much of a point in the front. The pics online make it look very flat like the Mustang. So I took those 2 pics so there were some pics that showed what it really looked like.

All in all it was an enjoyable day. After waiting 3 months I finally got to see it, so I'm content (as content as I can be without actually having it in my garage). The first 2 times I heard the presentation they were done by Tricia (dark hair) the 3rd was a blonde that I didn't catch the name. Of course they reiterated that it is still a concept, that no official word has be given regarding production. But she seemed did point out the great response they've been getting, as well as the HUGE amount of eMails they have received requesting it be put in production. She then asked everyone there to go to Chevy.com and let them know what we thought. That it's now 'in our hands' as to whether it gets produced. While she wouldn't say anything concrete, she did make it out as being extremely hopeful, and seemed to hint at things. But that could be my wishful thinking hearing hints where they didn't exist. LOL

Well, I've rambled enough...

EDIT - For some reason the pics stopped showing up. That's odd. I'll have to post them elsewhere.

EDIT2- Ok, it seems to be working now Geocities only allows so many views I guess. Any suggestions on a better place to upload images to?

yeah I don't think that the grill was that ointed either, I really liked it, I actually think my 2005 Cavvy might be more pointed than it, much more muscly looking the 'stang in my opinion though

Wow! that picture you took of the Challenger is interesting. I thought the car was nearly flat in the front. I havent seen any of these concepts in person yet. The Camaro looks less pointed in front than the Challenger now. Camaro still looks the best!

Re: Finally Got To See It..

I saw it in person on friday and as much as I loved the pictures of the car on the net and in magazines, in person its really striking. It has same visual effect on me the 69 Camaro does. I didnt think the car could be better, but this car is s smash hit. The day I was there the Camaro had the buzz, the chalenger had a smaller less interested crowd. It might be because people saw the same car over 30 years ago.

I thought it was totally flat too. I was really surprised when I walked up and saw it had a point as great as the Camaro. (Again, I don't understand why people felt the Camaro was too pointy, but not the Challenger.)

Here's another pic of the whole car that shows the point.

People probably aren't showing off that angle due to the fact that it REALLY resembles the Camaro in it. At least to my eyes it's very similar. But it lacks something the Camaro has. I don't know what it is, but it's more bland. The Camaro looks more muscular...

I saw the Challenger in person and still didnt think it was pointy. The grille is flat and recessed. I think some of it is the grille bulges in the center and the bowtie is flush with the end of the hood and the bumper rather than being recessed at all. Not sure how I feel about that. Still want to see it in person. One of the goals of the 69 was to be more "pointy" look though.

Nice pics! like to see more when you can...

The grille may be flat and recessed in the Challenger, but the car itself is as pointy as the Camaro. It looks like if you removed the grille from the Camaro they'd be almost the same to me.

That depends on what you mean by pointy. The grill and the hood are pointy as well as the front spoiler. Also the sides on Camaro concept are angular and pointy at the top as opposed to round like the Challenger. There is nothing pointy about the Challener other than the grille and mirrors. The rear Camaro roof line looking down is flater on the sides comming to more of a point like an 80's testerosa. Same with top of the rear 1/4s I havent seen the Camaro in person but, Just from the pics I think the Camaro grille should be pointy but the grille slightly more recessed in the center where none of it is flush with the front. But like I said I havent had a chance to see the Camaro in person yet...

I should have clarified what I meant. I only meant the 'point' on the front ends of the vehicle are about the same (if you don't count the grille they are very similar). Not the rest of the car. The Camaro as a whole is far more angular. (And imo more 'beefy' looking.)

Though I was surprised when I saw the Challenger in person it wasn't as 'smooth and rounded' as I had thought it looked in the pics. I don't know how to describe how it looked to me other than the angular look of the Camaro softened and not as severe. I'll take the sharp angles of the Camaro, but the Challenger was MUCH better looking to me in person than I thought it would be.

Before I would have ranked the 3 cars like this-

1- Camaro
2- Mustang
3- Challenger

But after seeing them all in person I have to revise that to-

1- Camaro
2- Challenger
3- Mustang

It's the execution. If you look at the straight on shot of the Camaro you posted you will notice that the grill is larger and drops down to the center and narrower and lifts to the outside that with the more modern chin (lower fascia-airdam) that is pointed gives it that pointy look. In person the Camaro from the side veiw, the front actualy looks blunt due mostly to the short overhang.

Where the Challenger has a 70's era tucked under valance (like the orig Challenger) it does not appear as pointed. It's more of what people initialy expected when the retro themes were announced. The Camaro being a more modern interpretation of a 69. I think most people wanted it to look more like the 69 Camaro. Then when it debuted the front among other things were initialy were not well received.

I think the old school guys have warmed up to the design. I know I have! There are some things I would like to see tweaked though.

I like the looks of the Challenger except for it's weight and size. Especialy it's height from the body line down, it's way too tall. It's height stands at almost 58" vs the orig Challengers 51".

Re: Finally Got To See It..

Even though I was at the Camaro press debut back in January, and also got to get up close and personal with the Challenger as well, it's still facinating to read everytime someone new sees these vehicles in person for the 1st time. I now know why Scott gets such a rush doing his joib this year.

Camaro is simply awesome in person. Once you see the car with your own eyes, you tend to look at the "Camaro looks like a Mustang" crowd with a new sense of befuddlement.

The Challenger looks REALLY nice in person. The drawback to it is that it's traveling around the auto show circuit in the Camaro's more radical shadow. If Chrysler hadn't leaked early pictures of it back in December, and quickly got it approved for production for spring next year, Challenger probally wouldn't have much press at all as long as the Camaro was sitting in the same hall.
