Engine Cover Question ?

Just a quick question. Does anybody know if the stock LS3 engine cover is purely cosmetic , or does it serve some purpose like a heat shield or sound dampener ?The reason I ask is that I prefer the look of the Corvette style cover and would like to swap them out if possible . Thank you in advance - Ryan

Plastic doesn't make a very good heat shield and only a minimal sound dampener so, as an educated guess, I'd have to say it's purely cosmetic. I would be curious to see if there are any mounting issues between the two caused by different air intake setups and hose routings and whatnot. I like the Vette style better myself.

It's purely cosmetic.

I've heard that there is some acoustic considerations as well w/ regards to valvetrain noise. I could go out and look, but I'm too lazy. Either way, if you like them, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work, other than they would say "CORVETTE" on them.

I know the new CTS's engine cover contains acoustic insulation to help keep engine noise to a minimum...but I for one hope the cover on the Camaro has little or no insulation, especially the SS. I want to hear the roar of the LS3/L99!

I just went and checked, and there is definitely some insulation stuff on the underside of the Corvette LS3 covers. Seems to be about 1/4 inch thick.

I didn't happen to notice if there was any insulation under it, but when I got to check out the Camaro at my neighbour's the other day, he showed me just how quick and easy the engine cover pops off ..... pull the oil filler cap off, and pop the cover off ... it literally takes only seconds! I can't see something like that making a big difference from a sound perspective? You'd probably need a very sensitive sound meter to measure the difference!

Me too ... there's about ~2.5 lbs of useless weight over top of the front wheels! Not to mention, it's only going to be in the way every time you want to play with the engine! Cover-up is only for ugly objects that don't look good on their own ... an LSX engine is a thing of beauty without some silly cover(s)!!!
