Thumbs up Camaro Concept at Melbourne Motor Show

Just saw the mighty Camaro (pronounced as spelt in Australian speak, I don't know how our US friends keep mispronouncing it 'Camero'…) at the Melbourne Motor Show. A few thoughts…

I know that the Camaro concept is only a show car, but if the car is built as seen, I can quite honestly add that the car doesn't need wheels that big (21" fronts and 22" rears). I'm not suggesting that the top of the range model shouldn't be shod with wheels/tyres so big as I' sure others wouldn't settle for anything less. It's just that I can settle for less and I'm sure my wallet will thank me.

The car has real presence. It is much larger than I ever thought it'd be, that's despite being privvy to the dimensions papers before seeing the car in person. It's w-i-d-e… in the same way that mid-engined cars like Ferrari and Lamborghini etc… are wide, although those exotics need to accommodate physically huge engines. The Camaro concept has the good old, competent, compact and lightweight LS2 under its hood. To that end, I'm assuming GM could have decided to go smaller size-wise but want to make a firm statement with this car. It suggests to me that GM is once again serious about design and Camaro will not be taking any prisoners with it.

It is a no compromises design. It will accommodate the biggest of Aussies and Amercians in comfort.. And that's just in the back seat. The rear visibility is excellent, better than most vehicles on the road today. Surprising that visibility should be that good given how poor most sexy 'tudor' designs are in that area. Having said that, I wonder how about how good vision will be with those side view mirrors? Memo to GM, hand SSbaby the keys to the car so that other members can be reliably informed.

The nonfunctional (fake) chrome exterior door handles don't exactly look out of place. It took me a while to notice that they are fake. The orange accents around the chrome Camaro badging is cool! The chrome fuel filler cap is also cool. I apologise for overusing the term 'cool' but this car has REAL character! That menacingly sharp front end when viewed from side-on is shark-like and I can easily believe that GM designers used a shark for inspiration when conceiving this concept. In the wash up, I took many pictures, too many to be honest but I want the dreams to remain with me until the car is finally available here in Oz. Please Holden, when the car lobs in North America, can I also request that Australia be included in the intial release program?

The only thing that disappointed me about the Camaro display was that there were no doors opened to enable the audience to take a look at its interior and also disappointed that the car's headlights weren't turned on. It might have been for very good reason… the car was perhaps a show car mule and not very functional. But that's OK! At least I saw enough to want one… just need to know where I need to go to sign on the dotted line as we don’t have any Chevy dealers in Oz.

Kudos to GM for looking after us enthusiasts.

Nice to see you are getting as much enjoyment and anticipation out of the concept over there as we are over here.

LOL I'm glad someone else points out how so many from the US (I'm from the US myself) pronounce it wrong...

I get so tired of hearing Kuh-maero instead of Kuh-marrow.

Congrats on getting to see it in person. Stunning vehicle.

The door handles are real and are functional. There was another thread that discussed just how they work and there is a video on this site for it.

Ahem, even though it would appear to be pronounced "Kuh-marrow" (rhymes with Tomorrow) I believe the traditional (and original) pronunciation is "Kuh-Maero" (as in an arrow).

Of course, this also started the annoying trend of spelling it "Camero" .

Maybe Red can chime in.

Which concept was shown? The red mock-up or the running silver one? As was mentioned, the silver one has a full interior, and functioning door handles. I'm also curious as to how you could judge rearward visibility without being able to sit in it. Or, how you came to your conclusions about the back seat space when no doors were opened to reveal it.

There is also a silver mock up. This one was shown at Melbourne.

Cars from the Concept Molds

1x running Silver
1x running Orange Convertble
2x running Bumblebees
1x Red Mock-up
1x Silver Mock-up

Definitely was the silver push car. There are some pics in this thread taken at the Melbourne show.

The pronunciation is just sarcasm on my part. I don't care what they call it to be honest. It's a Chev!

Yes, definitely a mockup as the tailpipes weren't connected to any exhaust from what I could see.

The wheel rims were also protruding outwards from the tyres. Hmmm

'marrow' is said like 'arrow' with an 'm'.

Nothing like tomorrow. That would be kuh-mar-oh. Which is totally wrong.

'aero' is pronounce like 'aeroplane'. Or 'air-o' And I hear a number of people say 'Camaero'. The 'ar' shouldn't sound like 'air'.

Kuh-Mar-Oh and Kuh-Mair-Oh are wrong

Kuh-Marrow is said just like it's spelled. Kuh-mARROW. Like what's in your bones... The 2nd A should have the same quality as the A in the word Hat or Cat.

Ok, I wasn't sure since you used 'aero'. Generally 'aero' and 'arrow' aren't pronounced the same.

Aero= air-oh

Whereas I don't know anyone that pronounces 'arrow' 'air-o'. LOL Think of the 'ARRID Xtra Dry' commercials.

But I think we're just using different ways to get the same point across. That or you have an accent that gives yours a different sound than I'm thinking. LOL

(Yes, I'm extremely **** about correct pronunciation of words.)

I'll have to record it and upload it sometime... (Damn dog chewed my mic's wiring though.)

Well, you are from Jersey.

I do pronounce Camaro as in Kuh-mair-o. So does the rest of the midwest....and anywhere else I've ever been.

Midwest, that explains it.

I know some people that say it that way (I don't get where 'mar' an sound like 'mair' though). But most I know pronounce it (correctly ) as Kuh-Marrow (you know, like in the bones or like the word 'marry').

Trust me, I know a lot of NJ has a bit of an accent on somethings. I don't generally have it though. Kinda like TV newscasters are more or less 'accentless'.

The worst South Jersey accent is how they say water. They insist on saying 'wooder'.
