CAFE and Camaro
CAFE and Camaro
So new CAFE standards are going into effect around 2020 (in defiance of all logic and common sense) and GM has been saying it will have a big impact on product plans. I'm not going to say that Camaro will be gone - that's not possible at this point, and spreading doom and gloom doesn't help anyone. However, I am wondering if this changes GM's targets for the Camaro in terms of sales and perhaps V6 / V8 balance. V6 will always be a higher volume, but is it possible that production will skew more heavily toward V6 in light of these new regs? Is it possible that a V8 Camaro will become a more difficult to find car in the next iteration? Is it possible that E85 capability will be GM's out and just making V8 Camaros FlexFuel will eliminate them from these standards? What does everyone think?
I'm thinking that the Gen-V engines, and future, similar engines are going to be saviors of sorts for this and other Go-fast V8 cars.
Personally, I think E-85 is a must, not just for the loophole, but for future capability. And, although I AM getting a Camaro, if the first year doesn't have an E-85 V8...I'm thinking about waiting.
It would be nice to hear what the Fbodfather has to say about it...but, he may not be able to say much, now that I think about it

E85 capability is an out? Is that true? That would sure make it easy.
Whatever happens, GM's gonna need to sell some 40 mpg cars to make up for Camaro. I'm not sure how all of the alternative powered and fueled vehicles coming online will affect CAFE.

Performance will always find a way.
The problem is the price of Gs is up as well as the price of cars will increase as to make them strong and light gets expensive.
I think you will be able to go fast in the future just at what cost?

Cafe standards are fine, I honestly like the idea alot. The problem here isn't that the Camaro or Corvette should have to be bumped up to meet the standards however, the problem is that all the other car that Chevy produces need to be brought up to snuff.
For years europe has put out turbo diesel vehicles that get excellent fuel economy and it is high time that American car manufacturers start to embrace the idea of some turbo diesel passenger cars. There is absolutely no reason why the minority of the vehicles sold per year by a car manufacturer should be in jeopardy due to fuel economy especially when there are 5 other models made by that same manufacture that make comparatively terrible fuel economy.
In essence the performance cars are not nearly in as much jeopardy as vehicles like Trucks, SUV's, and passenger cars that need to pick up the slack and really have no good reason why they get such horrid economy.

The problem with CAFE is it does NOTHING to reduce the price of gas, and actually increases the price of cars.
Even as the new standards start coming into effect and cars get better mileage, even if it resulted in a miraculous drop in oil demand (or gas demand for that matter), OPEC needs simply to cut production only slightly to maintain the per barrel price.
Ultimately I think its a step in the right direction, because it will make us more efficient users of gasoline, which should help insulate us against price spikes and such...but its really whizzing in the wind in terms of actually doing anything about long term oil supply/demand issues.

I'd love to see a hybrid Camaro. Something like the Tahoe setup where everything is basically in the tranny. I wonder how hard it would be to retrofit that to work with an older 4th gen with an LS3...
Not to turn this into a political discussion but, CAFE standards will probably have little to no impact on the cost of petroleum products. IMHO of much greater concern are the tree hugging liberals and environmentalists (including those elected to office) that have kept us from building any new US refineries for the last 35 years and throw every roadblock possible in the way to prevent new oil drilling and opening up new areas for producing oil in the US. Frankly, I have not seen a candidate for the upcoming elections from either major political party that impressed me enough to vote for them, just more of the same old double-speak and inaction while they increase taxes and spend the taxpayers money into oblivion. Off my soapbox and back to the Camaro.Clyde
