5th Gen. Camaro Model Kit Build Up Thread
I am starting this thread as a detailed step by step build up of the AMT Camaro Concept model kit. Anybody else building the model can also jump in and add tips and photos. Hopefully this thread will help anybody that doesn't normally build models but is interested in making there own custom Camaro model.
I love building models and have done so since I was a child, I now mostly enjoy it because it gives me a small inside look at how the car was engineered and assembled.
I have not started building the model yet, so this thread will be updated as I progress with the model. This is a hobby I enjoy but sometimes finding free time for it is very hard, plus the detail I like to put into my models is time consuming so this will be a long process that won't be over in just a few weeks.
One of the first things I need to do is choose a color, I have narrowed the colors down to 3 choices. I wanted to show the Camaro Concept in a different light that we haven't seen yet.

Here are the 3 colors I've narrowed down:
1. Tamiya Deep Metallic Blue
2. Tamiya Metallic Black
3. Colors by Boyd: Roadstar Florida Orange Pearl (a cross between Daytona Sunset Orange and Atomic Orange)
I had Orange picked out before the Convertible was unveiled, but I am going to poll these colors and let the board members here decide on what color the model will be.
Here are some photos of the colors on other models, so you can get a feel of what they look like.

Hopefully we will have a clear winner by the time warmer weather arrives and I can begin painting.

This is a cool thread idea!
I am actually working on my own as well right now. I took some liberties on it. I am trying to create a "believable" Z/28 convertible version. I chopped the top off and used the plastic from the roof to create the front ground effects. I also cut out heat extractors just behind the front wheels, similar to the 80`s Firebirds.
It had to have stripes! I started with a white base coat, masked the stripes (sucks, but worth it), and then layed down the dark red metallic. Once dried, I clear coated the whole thing with about 5 coats of clear. I started wet sanding and buffing out the finish as you can see in the pics, but didnt get to the passenger side yet. That is why there is still orange peel on the passenger side.
I also added a modified rear wing from a GTO kit that I thought sorta followed the Camaro`s lines.
I almost forgot.....I also cut RS style healight covers, so this will have the RS hideaway headlights like Ive seen in some concept images.

and keeps a very clean line. I also used the clear coat "trick", where, after masking your stripes, you spray a thin coat or two of clear before spraying the color. This keeps the color from bleeding under the tape and giving you jaged edges.
How is your project coming along? Any progress pics?
