Daytime Running Lamps

I just noticed in the spec brochure that it mentions that with the RS package the foglights become the DRLs. I was hoping that the halos would act as the DRLs like this:

Then I noticed it looks like the parking lamps are on and the halos come on with them.

So it sounds like RS cars have foglight DRLs and non-RS are probably dimmed headlamps for DRLs. I can see alot of people driving around with their parking lamps on or installing some halo DRL mod if this is the case.

I'd prefer a seperate DRL only lamp to be honest. It goes with my thinking of not useing brake lights as turning signals.

One light, One Purpose.

Reason I see that is because

-LS versions dont come with Fog lights so they need to have a way to make that model and other base models have DRL's

-With the xeon (SP) Headlights, they may not last as long if used as DRL's.

GM does this with other models that have optional High intensity lights.

But as pointed out, if you turn on the parking lights (like most other newer GM cars) the DRL's go off.

I hate, loathe, and despise the very existence of DRL's. Safety my butt. If someone cannot judge the closure rate of another vehicle on a cloudy day without the help of DRL's, then they shoukd not be driving. Stupid European and Canadian laws. Stupid Socialist governments. Sorry for the rant, but I really hate DRL's......I mean a lot.

I'm going to attempt to rewire the fog light DRLs so that the halos are the DRLs. If the government is making me have DRLs, then I'm gonna make them look cool!

Might be illegal, but I seriously doubt anyone (police) will notice that it's not stock.

Not having DRLs here isn't illegal.

Meh, I used to think the same thing. But even though I can see the car, I can see the car better with DRLs.

I think the idea of a independent DRL light separate from the fog lamps, and head lamp would make ALOT of sense, and make life easier. I hold this opinion after having DRL issues in my sunfire which fubared my headlights. Took going through the entire lighting harness to find where it had broken just so the car was drivable. A seperate system would allow for much easier diagnostics, and would not disable the car so you could still get to where you needed to go, when you needed to go.

You're expecting things to break and basing your opinion on one of the crappiest cars GM has ever made. The real solution is to make things more robust and insusceptible to having issues.

I do expect things to break. because sooner or later that will. Regardless of WHAT it is on. The more complicated a system becomes, the more likelihood that something will go wrong with it. That is just how things go. I have also seen things that look wonderful on paper, but the second you have to actually fix any part of it it becomes an expensive nightmare. Also I have noticed the same exact characteristics with the headlamp/DRL issue on several cars besides just that one model. So I would suspect that they system itself for powering the headlights is a faulty design to some extent.

i don't know if i really understand when the halos will be on. when you turn on the parking lights? so they come on with the amber parking lights and are only on when they are turned on? what exactly is the point of the halos other than the fact the look awesome?

It looks like the halos are on when you turn on the parking lamps or the headlights. And yes, the fact that they look awesome is the only reason they're on the car.

I guess this confirms the DRL options:

RS uses foglights:

Non-RS uses dimmed headlamps:
