4l60e??????

I was planning on doing some exhaust and induction work to my car. It's an automatic 94'Z. The only thing that scares me is the possibility of having problems with this tranny. I'm not going to be putting a converter or gears in it. My question is what kind of problems have you guys experienced with the 4L60E? I was thinking of converting it over to a 6spd. How much would the automatic tranny sell for?... the car has 56,000 miles on it. Thanks....

I have a complete T56 with new McLeod Street Twin clutch F/S. I was asking $2,500 but have had no takers, so I am considering lower offers. Email me or post here if interested.

A used 4L60E might go for ~$500 depending on the condition and if you can find a buyer.

Thanks Rich,, but I would like to buy everything, but the clutch as I am sold on the SPEC. A couple of my friends have them and I haven't heard them say one bad thing about them. Thanks anway....

Well.. I would like to have the trans... but how much do you want for it? I know it hasn't had the easiest life... but how much are you asking?

Not sure what you've heard about the SPEC, but I would pick up Rich's setup for a couple reasons.

1. Everything you'll need, ready to go.
2. The Street Twin is the clutch. People don't buy it because they can't afford it, not because they want something else more.
3. Rich is a standup guy and you know you are getting good parts.

Do a search on this board about the street twin. You won't need another clutch.

Why in the heck would you want an M6 Unless your like XXsiantsxx that does all his drag racing on the streets. I have yet to lose to any M6 at the track. I watch folks all the time with 50-85 MORE RWHP than me lose time and time again to me. You can easily build a "bulletproof"(if there is such a thing) tranny for a $1000.
I see M6's run 1.9-2.2 60 foots all the time out at my local track with slicks. I have ran a best of 1.77 60 foot time and should be around a 1.5xx-1.6xx now that I have done alot of suspension and chassis mods. For every tenth you lose in your 60 foot you will roughly lose .15 in your 1/4 mile time. So just having an A4 and "hooking" up hard you should have about .3-.45 on an M6 in the quarter.
I guess it all would depend on where you do your racing and what your goals are. My A4 is built with Raybestes blue parts otherwise stock parts. It runs a 2800 TCI Converter, a Hayden 15,000 tranny cooler, TransGo shift Kit, Corvette Servo, and Royal Purple Synthetic Fluid. I launch hard at the line and have no problems. I had it rebuilt 9,000 miles ago since I had a warrenty that covered it fully I thought I might as well take advantage of it.

I had a six speed and converted to an automatic. Both platforms have advantages and disadvantages, but an automatic is definitely much easier for the driver. My lights are more consistent with an automatic and it is easier to hook up. There is less to worry about at the starting line and I'm not burning through clutches any more although with a Street twin you shouldn't have that problem. An auto is also easier on the rest of the drive train as there is less shock at the launch.

The main reason I want to switch is that I don't want to be rebuilding this tranny and I'm afraid that's exactly what's going to happen,,, AND I like a stick car better.
I'd like to hear some of the do's and don'ts..... Like,,,, what tranny fluid would be best for me to run??? and some of you guys that have rebuilt your 4L60E's.... what was you doing that made it go? A friend of mine had a 93' and he must of put 5-6 tranny's in his. I also think the 6spds. are funner and you actually have to drive them....... I'm just looking for any suggestions that would keep me from tearing this thing out... Thanks in advance!

I think that the M6 has a number of advantages. I would never make the switch unless I were going bracket racing (for the consistency) or had a very high-po setup. Happily, I do have a very hi-po setup, that's why I am switching to a TH400. The T56 just isn't up to ultra high hp and a TH400 can be easily made as strong as needed, all you need is $$$. A 4L60E or a 700R4 can also be made pretty strong, again, it's all a matter of $$$ (and know how). That said, the only real disadvantge of the TH400 vs. the other automatics is weight and a bit more parasitic power loss (and the lack of an OD). On that basis, I am curious why tnthub went with a 700R4. Was it for the reasons stated above, or am I missing something?

As far as racing an M6, if the driver is very good it may be faster than an A4 in a lightly modded car. To actually go faster requires a lot of skill at launching and shifting. But with a relatively low-po setup the greater mechanical efficiency of the M6 will play a role. BTW: my 60' with the M6 are in the 1.5 sec range with a 26" E/T Street and I am not a very good driver. Of course, almost no one is good enough to be consistent with an M6!
