Your OBD-I PCM (93-95) will not set a code for removing the AIR system. You just need to make sure there is a good fuse and relay in the AIR pump circuit. AIR and EGR have nothing to do with each other. AIR runs only at startup to help the catalytic converter(s) heat up faster. EGR is used under cruise conditions to reduce the formation of NOx (oxides of nitrogen). The systems do not interface on the 94-97 LT1's. Only on the 93 did they share some common piping.
There is nothing unsafe in removing AIR. It just means your cat, if you still have it, will take longer to heat up and start working. You have to block off the point on the intake ducting where the hose connects to supply filtered air to the AIR pump, and you have to plug the holes in the manifolds (or headers if they have AIR connections).
There is no performance gain, just a minor weight loss.

What year is your car? AIR has a few year-to-year variations. If you have a 95-97, do you know if the "AIR recall" was done on it? If you have a 96-97, the above procedure will not work. There are other diagnostics added in OBD-2 that actually check to see if there is air flow into the exhaust manifolds.

If you have picture of the coil and temp sensor, please post it, because that does not sound familiar. The OBD-1 years have a 3-pin connector to the AIR pump, with two red wires and a black wire.
