Question Fuel cell for liquid-air intercooler.

What size fuel cell is needed for an air to water intercooler? I have a Vortech Mondo cooler, and want to put the water resivoir in the back. Do I NEED a 5gal cell, or can I get away with something smaller? I had thought about putting the cell in the nose of the car since the bumper and supports are removed, and had wondered if I could use a smaller 3gal fuel cell. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am using a 3 gallon fuel cell for my water/ice.I'm running the Vortech Aftercooler.I guess more might be better but I have dynoed 6-7 times in a row and my ice wasn't even melted yet in the 3 gallon cell.

I am using 5 gallons myself in the rear This will feed both my intercoolers

Basically what I did was figure how much the pump is going to circulate. Then figure out how long with my staging the car is going to need time wise. I think with the pump i picked i would need right around 4 gallons so I will have a surplus plus use the excess area to set the car up ballast wise if i need some more weight in the car. I know it is not much but still.
Only regret I have is I got one of the 5 gallon alum cells from Summit (great cell) but the plastic is better for the cold water wont absorb heat or shed the cold as much.

Steven,
Buy some insulation you can put on it. I have an aluminum cell too (it's a homebuilt setup) and I was thinking of doing that.

Where I work, we build equipment that cools atmosphere gases. The gases run through a bundle of copper tubes that are inside a large tube (like 10" diameter). Around the outside of the big tube, we glue on this black 1" thick industrial insulation.

Stuff would work good for you too and it doesnt look bad either.

Just a suggestion of course.

I use a 5 gallon upright Jaz fuel cell for my Vortech aftercooler. with some bending, cutting, and pounding it fits nicely in the spare tire well. I will see if I can get some pics up for you.

Thanks everyone, this is exactly the type of feedback I was looking for! I hadn't thought about the issues between the aluminum and plastic cell's, looks like I should consider the plastic over the alum.
Doesn't the efficiency of the core play a role in the sizing of the cell? Seems to me that the more heat you are pulling out of the air charge, you would size the tank accordingly.
Maybe I should just stop pulling my hair out and just go for the 5gal. plastic cell. I just hate adding the extra weight if I only need a 3gal.
Any more suggestions?

Blown
Spearco recomends a certain flow which i found a pump that met that requirement (was not going to buy there overpriced pump) the spearco pump is like 200 bucks where if you search you can find the exact pump for 69.00. They say if the water is too fast it will not transfer the heat good and if too slow will heat up too much.

Curt
Insulation is a great idea. I will try to find some and will wrap the water cell up with it.

I am also looking to do a 5 Gallon fuel cell in the spare tire compartment. Does anyone know the best and what kind of pump to use? I changed from the stock Vortech pump(2GPM) to an audi water pump(6GPM). Will that pump work? Or is there a better one to use?

Anyone have a few pic's so I can reference to?

I bought the one out of the spearco catalog. Although I didnt pay their prices. I got it from my local industrial supplier at about %40 of the price spearco wanted.

Question regarding water pump options

I was curious what seems to be a good GPM pump to use, how much would be enough?

I plan on using a 3 gallon fuel cell and putting it in the rear of the car

thanks
