Fuel Sending Unit Issue

A while back, I changed the fuel pump in my 97 SS and apparently didn't have the sending unit assembly seated properly at first...the sending unit didn't work. I pulled it back out the next day (after noticing the gauge didn't work), seated it properly, and the gauge still doesn't work. Did I fubar the sending unit, or is there any chance that it might have damaged the gauge (I only ask because I had a temp gauge quit after being pegged when I blew a head gasket in rush hour summer traffic)?

Shoebox has a writeup regarding how to check the sender:

Page down a bit for how to test the sender.
