Gas pedal stuck 5 times this morning and almost killed me

2000 LS1/T56

Driving to work today I give it some gas in 5th and when I take my foot off the gas pedal, it keeps accelerating, through it in neutral and it was still revving for about 3-4 seconds, eventually it stopped, put it back into gear and was fine for a while. Bit further down the road, same thing, 5th gear, give it some gas, and it sticks and starts to rev with my foot off the gas, happened a few more times on the way.

I checked the pedal and theres nothing interfering with it (at least on the inside of the car). Any ideas on where to start here? I don't want this to happen again

Check your throttle body.

where about? Just the cable on the butterfly? Or something else?

We had that problem a few times with the F.A.S.T 90mm throttle body. We added a large return spring and it corrected the problem.

happened again on the way home, I am able to get it to stop by putting my foot under the gas pedal and pulling up on it. You think oiling the throttle cable will fix this? Or a broken/worn out return spring? Where can you get a replacement spring?

Check the butterfly it may be sticking, a little throttle body cleaner while working the valve will get it loose again.

Go under the hood and unhook the cable at the TB and see if the TB works ok then go from there.

ok so I took a look this morning and I think the cable is stretched a bit....is there an adjustment somewhere, or should I just go and replace it?

When I pulled on the butterfly to simulate WOT, the cable came out of the "slit" in the butterfly, and kind of got caught on the edge of the slit, if you can picture that.

If it stops when you pull up on the gas pedal its not the cable, its the pedal assy. Get under the dash and look for any obstructions or sticking. You may have to clean and lube the pivot. Disconnect the cable from the TB and get in the car and pust the pedal, if it doesn't return on its own that's the problem.

I had the same problem before. Then I felt like a moron after I realized it was the edge of the pedal getting caught on the floor mat. May not be your problem, but something to check. Do you have pedal covers (i.e. aluminum pedals that snap on on top of your factory pedals)? I've seen the little clamps on those flip out and get stuck on the transmission hump and cause the throttle to stick also.
