Torque arm?
The torque arm (TA) keeps the axle from "wrapping", where the front of the axle tends to pivot up and the rear pivot down under hard acceleration. The factory piece in F-bodies is stamped steel, and the front mounts to the transmission tailshaft.
Tubular aftermarket TA's are stronger and stiffer than the factory stamped steel unit, thus are less prone to flexing and breaking. Some aftermarket TA's relocate the front mount from the transmission tail shaft to the floorpan of the car, reducing the stress on the transmission and tranny mounts. Many aftermarket TA's are adjustable, allowing the pinion angle to be changed to improve the car's setup for racing.
