1991 air conditioner recharge/upgrade
1991 air conditioner recharge/upgrade
Hi folks
I am new to this site. I have a 1991 firebird. I am told that it needs a recharge and also an upgrade to the new refrigerant or find some of the old.
Any site, forum or advice? Have any of you 3rd generation owners already done this procedure? Thanks in advance.

Re: 1991 air conditioner recharge/upgrade
make sure they test your system before its recharged chances are it has a leak in the condenser as was the case both my 91s and my 89. ac repair work can be quite pricey just so you know.
Re: 1991 air conditioner recharge/upgrade
2 years ago mine wasn't blowing as cold as it should. Since I have an A/C certification, I purchased 3 cans of R12 from Kragens, $15 each plus 2 cans of oil charge. Put 1 can of oil and 1 can of R12 and it's back to good as new. The compressor is leaking a little oil and slinging it on the hood insulation. Not too bad after 15 years. I would recomend having it leak tested, and if not too bad, recharge with R12 if possible. I still have the other 2 cans waiting if needed. If a big leak jis detected, that would be the time to retrofit if it's what you want to do. Could be costly.
Re: 1991 air conditioner recharge/upgrade
I need some R12 so I can recharge my AC, but it seems I can't buy it without an EPA cert. Are there any other options? I don't want to use r134a because I've heard about how poorly it performs in an R12 system.
