At 55 mph or higher the steering wheel has a vibration or "wobble" to it. Lower mph driving the steering wheel is very responsive and tight...

Probably a dumb question, but is that just an alignment?

could be alignment.. could be that one of your front tires is out of balance too.

 

That is a possibility, but my buddy did the balancing at his BMW dealership and i was with him. Seemed to be all good when we were there.

 

any amount of things can make a wheel unbalance though. never know could have thrown a wieght.. or any number of things. but balance was always the one thing that would make the steering bounce.. even with a hugely messed up alignment it would not bounce on any car i have had

 

guess ill have to check it out and see if one of the weights is missing. I think we used two of them (the stick kind on the inside of the rim, not the clip ones on the outside edge). Might just have to swing by him again to rebalance it. DOH!

 

yea. i have never had much luck with the stick kind.. I always tend to throw them off due to the crappy state the roads are in.

 

yeah, i looked, and the passenger front wheel only has one weight and the driver side has two. So that might be the problem. I really cant remember if we had two on each side... Ill have to ask my friend if that seems odd.

 

The number and placement of weights depends on each individual tire/wheel combo; your front left and right tires/wheels won't use the same number of weights.

 

that is kinda what i figured... maybe it is just the road that i am driving on... they arent exactly smooth all the time...

 

I would still say its the ballance.
Even without having lost a weight it could still be off, if the tire wasnt put on perfect it could have moved a bit from when it was first balanced, it could have been out of round and driving helped it, there could have been a rock in the tread the first time around.
There are so many things, I would just go get it ballanced again. (ps, most cheapo joes tire shops do a better ballance job then big dealers, bmw or not. When you do it 200 times a day you get real good at it.)

and a rough road comes through the stearing wheel far different then ballance, and isnt effect by speed as much. thats why the shimmy only becomes apparent the faster you go.
