Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
Seeing the post about a supra vs blown mustang by gotboost, reminded me of this race I witnessed myself.
In Houston, TX we used (they may still do) race off a street called Rankin road. Sometimes there would be almost 2000 people out there....it was crazy fun. Anyways, we got there early one night and there was a red firehawk there burning tires and such. I got to talking to the guy and he had like a chip or w/e and exhaust done, minor bolt ons on this car. While we were talking a Toyota Supra came in and parked. He got out and started talking to us and he was cool guy. Well the firehawk owner decided to test the Supra out. They go for fun, but the Supra insist on giving the Firehawk a 5 car length from the dig. Well I go up there to count off the 5 lengths, and the supra guy told me no no, give him 5 cars back fromt he line. So now the firehawk is 5 cars behind the starting line and gets the move. When he crosses the starting line, then the Supra goes. I tell you what the firehawk was a pretty fast car, but I have never seen any car get up from the dig as fast as that supra did. The firehawk goes by (which give him a momentum advantage) and the supra takes off, I counted 5 gears that it scratched the tires. By time the supra got halfway downt he track (1/4 mile mark off) he was already passing the firehawk. and still ended up winning by like 8-10 car lengths (maybe stretching it a little bit). I am telling you I have never seen a car get up and go like that on the street.
Anyways, I have many stories I could tell. I was BIG time street racer in Houston and seen allot of things (even seen people get killed while racing). Here and there maybe I will tell some more stories, if people ar einterested.

yep, called good driving. I can take off in my car (old car) without spinning and hit second and third down the track.....not hard to do when you know how to drive. I didn't say he had smoke coming from the tires, he just barked the tires at each shift.

It's easy to have that in a turbo car. No boost = traction. When that turbo finally spools you can gain 300+ hp in a 1000rpm span (I've seen some Supra dynos where it's more like 500) which overwhelms the tires.

not knowing ANYTHING about Supras... Would he reasonably be able to shift into 6th gear in a 1/4 mile race?
(If you counted 5 scratches...) That seems like a very long 1/4 mile if he was able to get through all gears.
Re: Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
Cool. I use to do quite a bit of street racing up in Seattle( ikea) and elsewhere. Most of the time I drove to the races in my car, let my friends race and then I would put in a couple runs. I was never dumb enough to race modified supras though. I had several friends with 650-800hp stock bottom end supras. Those were the days. I can only imagine what you saw there in texas. If you have any more stories, by all means post them!

Kris, I am going to go with the notion that the supra was not stock, and seeings how it got out of the whole so fast, (using my brain) I will go with the notion that he does not have stock tranny, in fact he was shifting between gears pretty fast, but what do I know I was only standing there seeing this with my own eyes and hearing this with my own ears.
I love the way you post a kill story and then people pick it a part. That is some funny stuff man...I tell ya

Don't get upset man....he wasn't picking it apart. His question did make sense though, you don't scratch 5 gears in a 1/4 mile race. I'm sure the storie's true and maybe there were just 4 scratches or something. No one replaces the stock getrag unit on the supra unless they're looking for 9's. It's a very strong tranny.

Re: Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
Hold up...my mistake. I see where I made a typo. I didn't mean that he spun 5 times, I meant he barked the tires up to 5th gear.....which would be 4 scuffs....sorry bout that. And who knows since I am not sure what a blowoff sounds like, one of them could have been that....I do not know.
well going back to what I first wrote:
I did not say I counted 5 scratches, I said 5 gears that he scratched....which means I did not make a mistake in my post afterall....it was just mis read.....lol
And as I said possibly one was blowoff....I have no idea, but it sure sounded like tires when he went to 5th gear, but again he was almost a 1/4 mile away from me.

Re: Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
That's a great point! Especially the SSBOV's which really do sound a lot like wheel spin....
Btw, I gotta pair of them for sale if you know anyone that might be interested?
Universal adapter kit. Slightly used, $125.

OFF TOPIC, but last weekend there was a 93 BPU supra here in town that was from around the KC area. Well little did I know that they guy driving it was dating an ex girlfriend of mine that goes to KU. Well we talk a while then he takes it out and is messin with my friend in his 05 GTO. That supra was just plain mean. It put down 430 to the wheels and when that boost kicked in it as unreal how much he gained. That was a bad *** car.
Re: Supra vs 97 (I think) Firehawk
Well there are a few six speed street Supra's that trap into the 150's and 160's so the car could have hit 5th gear well before the end of the 1/4 mile.
BTW... The stock V-160 six speed Supra tranny has seen high eight second times in a full weight car and held up to it. The Supra has a VERY strong tranny, stock rear end, and axles; all capable of holding up to eight second times.
