Color change on a car...

Hey guys...

What kind of costs do you think you woudl see in a complete color change of a 4th gen f-body.

I know it involves alot of work... Just wondering on a decent job, doesn't have to be showroom, better then factory, blow your quality with detail.

But a decent job.

Lets say I pulled the door sills and full interior, and weatherstrippings. Even turnsignals/headlights/taillights.

had it take in, had them paint it, doesn't have to be quality under the everything or even the interior of hte car, just want them to go over the edge, so say if you push the weatherstripping in, you don't see the old color where they taped off. Got up and over the fenders, sides and bottom of hod but doesn't have to be clearcoated underneath. Slightly into the engine bay(doesn't have to look perfect under the hood. I know it wouldnt' match.

But for the most part, the door jambs and hatch area woudl look decent

Woudl it only add on like maybe a $300-500 more then a full car repaint? Woudl cut them down on time having to tape off tail lights and such.

Just wondering.

You could get prices from $1000-10000.

My advice is to shop around as much as possible and ask for references so you can see examples in person. I have found a great painter who charges very fair prices ($2500 for repaint, color changes, too).

Obviously I was just looking ballparkish...

I know a color change is alot more then a normal paint, but then I was thinking not "that" much harder if the owner did alot of the work beforhand.

Depends on if you're doing the prep work yourself.

Sanding, primering, etc.

Whether you provide the paint or not, many shops are particular about the brand of paint they'll put in their guns.

Also depends a lot on the color, and the amount of blending, or if there's a base coat necessary, as in going from a black car to a white car, don't want it to turn out grey.

Body shops around here would do a color change for around $5000 to start. You could get the maaco special for $300, or you could have a custom job for $20,000. Average for a good body shop is probably in teh $5-7000 range.

Just quoted 2500 for Boyds red plus 250 each door and rear hatch and over the front fenders into the engine bay(so 1000 more.) Base price was for same color as it came with. This also included door and rear quarter panel repairs. New moldings and my supplied aftermarket hood. Small body shop locally and have seen end results on cars from there. Hope this helps.

7k to 10k doesn't sound that unusual for a quality job. Shop around, because the best work will cost between that range and more, unless you know the painter or body shop owner, and/or can get a bargain.

It never happened to me, although I wish I could get a windfall bargain like that. Beware..with aftermarket paint, you will get exactly what you pay for!
