Can you change the gears inside a T56 ?

In 93, they had this gear set ~ (a) 2.97/2.07/1.43/1.00/.80/.62

From 94-97 they used these ~ (b) 2.66/1.78/1.30/1.00/.74/.50

Mine is a 95, but I have to get the tranny rebuilt, its going in the shop tommorow, and if it needs new gears, I want the first set of gears with the 2.97 first, not the ones already in it. Can they just swap them out at the shop? The guy seemed like he had to look into it and let me know, but someone on here has to know if you can just change the gear sets without anything else. And if other stuff needs changed, what does and how much ???

sorry, don't have the answer, but I am curious myself what it would be. Try calling D&D performance. If anyone knows anything about T56's, I'd say it would be those guys.

You can do allot of things to the T-56... I don't know what changed on them but I assum it's possible. If I were to mess around with the gears on a T-56 again i'd get the cut gears... and call it a day.

Re: Can you change the gears inside a T56 ?

I've taken my T56 apart... personally, if the shafts are the same diameter, I'd like to slide the 94+ 5th and 6th ratio gears onto the tailshaft of a 93 (with the 2.97 1st, M29?) since they can be easily accessed by taking off the extension housing. But i'm not sure off all the sizes, clearances, etc. That would be an awsome gearset.

[edit]- if you're looking to get the whole gearset, you'd be better off just looking for a 93 trans. I just looked on my old sheet and have the specs listed for the two 93 T56s: the 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th gears are the same between the two. But the M28 got the 3.36/1.35 (1st/3rd combo) while the M29 has the gears you listed. That 3.36 1st gear in a M28 with a 3.73 or 4.10 rear end gear would be murder

I'm curious what the benefit would be from your perspective?

Heres my perspective:

Uses for a 94+ gear set:
-Drag car
-Street/Strip car
-Road Racer (with a steeper rear end gear than the drag car, you still want to use 3rd and 4th as your primary gears for efficiency reasons)

Now my uses for the 93 M29:
-A road race car which you need to make frequent stops and 180+ mph bursts.
-A car which you have an obsesive compulsive desire to have all ratios perfectly evenly spaced, even overdrive.
-A car with a monsterous rotating mass which doesn't rev well and inertial losses would outwiegh(pun intended) the benefits of a close ratio trans.

A close ratio trans is desireable because it keeps you operating closer to peak HP whether drag strip or road racing alike. Granted the LT1's flat torque curve (i.e. decent hp in the midrange) is forgiving and makes this less of a priority compared to some other cars with peakier powerbands.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick, i just see perfomance benefits in extremely limited circumstances. Close ratios transmissions have always been desireable for performance cars(and motorcycles). Back in the day wide ratio 4spd transmission were for daily drivers to maintain your overall highway ratio and newer 6 spds make that reasoning irrelevent. Double overdrive will take care of the cruising RPMs as long as you don't get completely crazy with a low rear end gear.

Just trying to save you some money and hassle if i can.

My tranny needs rebuilt anyways ... and I was going to put 4.10's in it, But, if I can get a closer ratio tranny, it would be the same effect, and the tranny needs rebuilt anyways so ... Thanks
