Door Won't Shut!.... Bad Door Striker?

Okay out the sky blue, my driverside door simply will not shut. I push it and pull it as hard as I can and can get it to it's full closed position, but when I let go, the door just falls right back open!!! I can't drive it like this cuzz any ride with me is going to be a rough one!!!

I need the car on Monday and the upcoming week... I checked the Door Hinge on the door and it looks like it's been through some scraping... well compared to the perfectly fine passenger one anyway... I checked the door striker that latches onto the hinge... It looks pretty screwed as I can't even see most of it.

Where can I get a new door striker from and SOON?! How does that little mechanisim come off and reinstall? Do I posibaly need a new striker or perhaps a spring went bad? I threw some 3 in 1 oil on it and it only got worse, now I can't see ANY of the door striker!!! I tried using a hexen wrench to untighten the bolts, factory must have drilled em cuzz I can't even get them to BUDGE!!! What can I do to get them out?

Are these little mechanisms the same for ALL 4th gens? it looks like we all have the same doors... but advise me if I'm wrong!

Is it called a retainer?... I'm looking for the driverside so that would be LH 10211194 right?

If it is, THANK GOD IT'S NOT EXPENSIVE!!!

You're a life saver man, but where can I get a TORX wrench? I'm not ultimately familiar with tools... what do they look like?

Im soory about that....Yes it is called a retainer by GM... BUt if you go to a parts store they will probably look at you funny...

Driver side is left..... Pass side is right....

A TORX wrench/screwdriver looks like a "star" fitting.... Same as a hex, but with points...... You can usually find them at the local hardware store or parts house....

Not sure of the size.... My disc doesnt show the bolt... But its around a T-30 thru T-50....

If you can afford it, buy a set, yhat way you will always have the size you need...

Most local dealers can have it the same day or next.... You have to call/stop by in the morning.... It all depends on where the warehouse is located.. Who knows, they may even have it in stock....

Do I have to replace the WHOLE lock assembly to fix this door retainer or what?

OK, you lost me... The retainer (aka; striker bolt; is a metal piece that is attached to the door frame by two torx bolts)

Lock Assembly is located in the door, and when the door is closed the Lock Assembly hooks/locks onto the Retainer(aka; striker bolt) to hold the door shut...

Which part are you having trouble with???

If its the Retainer and its worn then replace.. Or you can adjust by loosening the torx bolts alittle and move it around, same goes with the Lock Assembly..

If the lock assembly is not functioning properly, then replace..

Re: Door Won't Shut!.... Bad Door Striker?

The LOCK ASSEMBLY is what I probably needed then... the Retainer is that ("n") shaped thing thats on the body frame that when you close the door, is invisibaly hooked onto by the Lock Assembly right?...

Whats the part number for the Lock Assembly and how do I replace that thing?... the assembly is held on by three bolts on the door isn't it? Their positions are in the shape of a triangle that surrounds the opening which the Assembly clenches and grabs the Retainer right?

From previous post....

I know it get upsetting when things break... You might check with the local dealership for suggestions and could probably get pics on the internals..

Or try e-mailing Shoebox for a pic....

Re: Door Won't Shut!.... Bad Door Striker?

I used to have this same problem. I dont know what its called but the thing that wraps around the post to hold the door shut would come down before the door would shut. Then it would keep the door from closing i went crazy one day in the snow trying to get it to close (i dont drive it in the snow but i opened it to get something). heres how you do it make sure the door is unlocked and hold the handle up like you were trying to open it that releases the latch and u can just push it back with your fingers or a screw driver and bam all fixed. mine kinda looked a little roughed up to from trying to slam it shut and it just bouncing off. but it only happens once in awhile now so i didnt go crazy looking for parts.
