I would check your timing, shoot for around 32-36 degrees total, all in by 3400 rpm..
HEI distributors are notoriously lazy on their timing curves, so get a recurve kit, and you will probably end up with around 14-18 degrees initial timing to get it right..

Yea I thought it should be around 12 deg timing but the book that came with engine said 4 deg so being afraid of burning a piston I set by there standards I will ck the total timing in the morning and go from there Thanks Tim

5 degrees initial timing? I would bump that up to ATLEAST 10-12 degrees to start.

for as much money that you have invested already take it to a mechanic and let him set it up before you do any damage with detonation
and make sure he will work on it while you are there so you can go along on the test drive --just so he doesn't beat on it too bad
