LT1 vs Acura TL Type S

Was out cruising around in my Z today and had a brand new Acura TL type S go by me, and heard one of them yell. I came up to a red light about 1/4 mile down the road, put my windows up, as did he. Light went green, I took off quickly to see if they wanted to play... sure did. We got even, went from a 50 roll, put 2 cars on em. Also raced from a dig, I ran up to about 70, put about 4-5 carlengths on 'em. Not bad for an 11 year old poor ole LT1.

Did chat a little with em while driving aside. They were cool..both of us complemented each others ride. Told 'em I had an LT1 with intake/exhaust. Their car was stock. They said their friend has a 98 Z28 and he beat it. I replied saying the car must have something wrong with it because LS1's are even faster.

Did a little research on the Acura TL type S...its a 3.5 liter rated at 286hp. Curb weight is 3674lbs.

they're pretty nice cars. you had the weight advantage and about 15-20 more hp. good kill.

That's Honda horsepower, meaning it's all on the top end with no torque to speak of. Peak numbers sell cars though so I'm sure their buyers think they're packing real power.

There's no way his mid-14 second ride is going to outrun an LS1. He'd better stick to racing Altimas and Eclipses.

Did you mean LT1?

Regardless, I have seen LS1s run 14s with bad drivers... If a TL can run mid 14s with a good driver (using numbers above, I don't know wha they'll do), then it could be a race with a stock LT1, or a poorly driven/tired LT1 car.

See red text above. He meant LS1. And I agree, either the LS1 was sick or he didn't know that he was racing.

I have seen more than a few LS1 cars run 14's...

When the LS1 cars started showing up at the track...none of them ran very well.

Then the 2000 models started popping up and they hauled.

I know a guy whose stock 98 (auto, probably crap gears) ran 14.0s @ 100 every time (bracket racer) so they're out there. That's nothing compared to trying to get best times out of a FWD car - that's nearly impossible to do repeatedly. I'll vote for the LS1's top end any day over the TL.

I admit up front that I've never been a fan of Honda products, mostly because of the people who worship them by default. My mother's 3-year-old Hyundai Azera makes damn near the same specs except for "only" a 5spd auto instead of a stick. Their Genesis sedan will make 100hp more than the TL, have RWD and a 7spd auto, and also pack Brembo brakes. Its price will also undercut the Type S by a few grand.

I can't wait for the first one that jumps on my Subaru thinking it'll be an easy kill. I may not have their snob appeal but I'll have more than twice their whp

Yeah I had a buddy with a 2.73 geared auto 98 convertible TA that ran consistant 14.ohs. While our stock 98 SS m6 ran a best of 13.30.
I've been doing this LS1 thing for 10 years and the 14 second f-car is the exception to the rule NOT the average.
