When i go start my car it usually turns over real slow and my battery guage drops REAL fast. Usually by the time the engine fires it is almost down to nothing. The starter has caught fire once or twice because I connected the wires wrong. But like i said it turns over real slow most of the time and then once in a blue moon it will turn over faster. I am thinking my starter is on its last leg and its draining my battery real quick because there is something wrong with it. The battery is brand new so its not the battery.

Assuming the battery has been tested and all power connections are clean then it is probably the starter.

well, considering that you have caught your starter on fire before I would be looking at the condition of the wires to the starter as well as at the battery. I would NOT rule out a bad battery, you know that a brand new battery can be bad don't you? What about alternator, when the car is running does it charge? you can go to *gulp* autozone and get the charging system checked for free but only a hand full of them will do it right so your taking your chances

When i turn the key to the on position the battery has a good charge. I know the alternator is working ok bc it maintains a good charge while the car is running. Its just when i start the car and the start ingages that the battery drops low and it cranks real slow and then fires up good. But like i said every once in a while it will crank over fine but thats kinda rare. The starter has been through hell after this new engine install.
