Hi all
Just bought a Lunati cam with these specs.

Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/234
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .478/.480
LSA/ICL: 112/108
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 2000-6400

Goal is to have 370-380 rwhp with this cam and LE1 heads Question is do I need guide plates? I recently purchased a set of GM Hotcam 1.6 roller rockers also. Still looking for some 30 lb fuel injectors also.

I wanted to go with a Comp cam 503 but got a great deal on this Lunati. I heard Lunati cams are pretty good, but I have never had any experience with them.

Your thoughts on any of the above would be appreciated. Tuning will be done by PCMforless.

The HOT cam rockers are probably self aligning, so no guide plates. People usually opt for non self aligning (guide plates used) for higher rev applications for a more stable valvetrain. IOW, the type of rocker dictates the use of guide plates.

Why not ask LE how that cam will work with the LE1 heads? Assuming the lift you quoted is with 1.5X rockers, even with 1.6X rockers the lift is less than the LT4 HOT cam.

Did not know that about the guideplates and I will ask Loyd and see what he says about that cam/LE heads.

Lift quoted would be with the 1.5 rocker arms. .511 with 1.6 rocker arms.

I'm no cam expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I personally think you would be better off with a CC503 or LE cam. That lift seems a bit small to be going through all the trouble of a cam install.

To compare....

CC503 with 1.6 rockers:
Intake = 0.536"
Exhaust = 0.544"
Duration @0.050 224*/230*

The slightly longer duration may help offset the smaller lift, but I can't say I've seen many LT1 Lunati dyno sheets.

I can say this for certain, if you can afford it, don't compromise on your parts. Get what you want. I've done the former and ended up spending more than double going back for what I wanted in the first place.

Eric -I have been asking around and after talking to a local guy at the speed shop ,he said this cam is a good grind and will make strong power. Strong mid-range and top-end. He runs a local dyno shop. In fact he said it was very comparable to the Comp 503.

I was set on the Hotcam for awhile and while its a good cam, almost eveyone I have read about on the forums, many said they should have gone bigger.

So then I decided to go with the 503 until this cam popped up. I agree with what you are saying about getting what you want the first time around. I have decided to give the Lunati a shot. I have done alot of research and there a very reputable company, plus Harold Berkshire is the cam designer. He worked for Comp in the '70's & '80's. Designed ALL of their High-Energy and Magnum cam lines. Then he started his own company called UltraDyne (now owned by Bullet Cams) and then worked for Lunati and designed their entire Voodoo cam series.

The plan is to go with LE 1 heads and the Lunati. GM 1.6 roller rockers. 30 lb injectors and a upgraded tune by PCMforless. I will have her dynoed when all said and done. I hope for some strong numbers. I have yet to talk to Loyd about his port work and how it will work with this cam.
