Air Box Base, Modable?

Air Box Base, Modable?
I looked at the air box today and noticed where the air comes in )before the filter) that this slot is very small. Can it be safely widened to allow more airflow, or is it large enough?
Thanks

i think your talking bout what is referred as the free ram air mod....got to ls1.com and click on mods and then free ram air and that should guide u along just fine
also www.installuniversity.com has it too i think....this sight has many things
www.ls1howto.com has a lot of stuff that is sort of more "hardcore"......
hope that helps

To save you some reading basically the Free Ram Air Mod cuts a hole in the base of the air box allowing air that would normally be pushed through the radiator to flow up into the air filter instead. It doesn't affect cooling. I usually run 205-210 just like before I did it to my SS. The only negative is that you need to check your filter more frequently to make sure you dont suck crap like grass or plastic bags up onto the filter. I think it might give a little gain but just replacing the stock lid will do more. There is also an aftermarket base that has a larger opening. I think it might be made by "Whisper" but I'm not sure. But from what I've heard it doesn't give much of a gain.

Stealth has the whole assembly like that..
In my tests.. A stealth with a larger than normal K&N filter and an MTI lid with a stock filter put out the same power..
What that tells me is that on the dyno, the openings dont make any difference at all.. So I went to the track to find out.. My car was running 13.4's... back to back, with 2.0 60' times.. I then put on the stealth.. 13.4's for the rest of the night.. with some slight variances.. Like a 13.5, and a 13.3 and even got a 13.28 too..
but it stayed for the most part at 13.4. So did opening up that underside of the filter help?
I dont think so.. Not without some pressurized ram air. Thats the only way I see it possible to help and only a slight bit in the 1/4 mile since you really dont get to build up gobs of power when you are pretty much stock..
On my next trip to the track, I will be trying out the MTI lid to see what happens there.
