Re: Ls1 oil change?

Unless you are at the track making passes every week, oil is oil. I buy the $20 deals, and always put 10w-30 in, as 5w-30 is just too thin for my liking. It's all preference. Oil companies will do whatever it takes to distinguish themselves from their competitors for your money, truth is, any oil with the correct API rating is fine. API-SN is the best currently. Every oil bottle will state what API rating it is either on the front or back and looks similar to this:

All engines are different, so relying on higher/lower concentrations of elements you find in the oil afterwords is a little hard to take to heart 100%. Especially when cars/engines all work under different driving conditions, weather, trip length, gasoline used, load, air filtration, and normally wearing components.

Re: Ls1 oil change?

I have consistantly used Mobil 1 in my cars for 20+ years with good results. I had an 91 S-10 Blazer (4.3 V-6) that an employee drove for about 40 miles with no coolant and the motor survived in surprisingly great shape and it did get really hot. That was 12 years ago. It is still running today with no motor work, no smoke and no oil consumption. My 97 Camaro got a new pan gasket at 130,000 miles and it looked brand new inside after 11 years of M1.

I did some timkin load bearing tests with various oils back in my SCCA road racing days. Mobil 1 scored very well. It did not test as well as Red Line Racing Oil but it is not as nearly as expensive either. But Mobil 1 was superior to Amzoil. I had a friend who put Amzoil in his MB and his Ford pick up at the same time. Within 6 months he experienced low oil pressure problems in both vehicles. I did the testing years ago and my testing is not complete since there are a lot more choices available now. But Mobil 1 has always served me well.

BTW, Corvette isn't the only car that uses Mobil 1 from the factory and recommends Mobil 1. Mercedes and Porsche recommend Mobil 1 and I am sure there are more. Not bad company at all.

Re: Ls1 oil change?

Depending on the specific oils a 10w-30 can be thinner at operating temp than a 5w-30 or a 0w-30. I haven't looked into it recently but I know for awhile M1 was like that their 10w-30 was almost a 10w-20.

Far as factory fills that has a LOT more to do with marketing than anything else and the fact you think it means something more is proof that marketing tactic works wonderfully. That is besides the fact an oil can be quality but still potentially not work particularly well in a given engine family. I know a few years back when I spent a lot of time researching all this M1 5w-30 resulted in consistently high iron content(not alarmingly high but elevated) in Used Oil Analysis from LT1s, same oil was awesome in a VW 1.8t motor after 15K miles. Quality product but LT1s just didn't like it despite what the oil fill cap said, not to mention formulas change so while I know 4-5 years ago M1 5w-30 resulted in elevated iron it might not today.

Really as said above any API oil should do the job, I would just encourage those who want to go the extra mile and spend the money on synthetic to actually research what works or fork out the $20-25 for an analysis.

There is a test out there on the web somewhere where someone does extended drains on an LS1 with both M1 and Amsoil.
Found it.

Would have been interesting to see the testing continue.
