What are the "bolt-on only" rules
#17
It has been a while since I have weighed it and I may not remember the numbers correctly but I think the car alone is arouns 2975 or so, and I add a little over 200 # to the it to get my current raceweight

What guidelines exist, in speaking with people everybody has a different view of what "bolt-on" means.
I view Bolt-on only classification as the following:
1.) Stock FACTORY Short and Long Block (NO rebuilds, no valvejobs) basically speaking as it came from GM.
2.) Any induction that bolts on
3.) roller rockers (any ratio)
4.) Any tubular exhaust and headers (cats optional)
5.) Any transmission (aftermarket convertors and clutches okay)
6.) Any rear-end and bolt-on suspension
7.) Any front-end bolt on suspension
8.) Any ignition system
Am I in left field with this list?

I think you can also add computer programming. I was very involved in this "class" years ago with my '95 Impala SS that went 12.80's (1.6 60') at 4,000 lbs. with only bolt-ons. I believe traditionally rocker arms are acceptable and heads and nitrous are not.
I'm now working on my '94 Z28 in hopes of passing the 11.80 bolt-on F-body record. I plan to do everything on your list as well as make the car VERY light!

Wow, I remember that issue lol, that was a while back. I remember way back when trying to do the same thing regarding the bolt-on best and what the real classification of bolt-on was etc, it wasn't until a little while after the concept that collectively roller rockers were considered a bolt-on on most people's lists, and k-members were still up and coming etc. Look at the weights on most of those cars, it still amazes me there were that many cars running that good back then, there were quite a few even when I was running mine the same way back in mid-2000. I would have loved to attend that shootout, but didn't get word of it until after the event was history. I was living up in CT back then and frequented E-Town all the time, got to go to all the SLP events, good times.
Thanks for posting the article John, and cool to see some of you are still posting on here with even quicker cars. Cheers!

I don't know, why would the carb'd guys be left out...
If all they did was carb and matching intake then that should be about an equal match up...
But if that intake was ported, and who wouldn't port the intake if they had it off, then that should not really be put out as a bolt-on...

Its as cast from GMPP (less the chunk of casting I ground off in one port). Who it still be a bolt on if modified a victor jr. intake to fit (I won't grind on it at all)?
I was waiting for the first person publically to cry "foul" since I was running a carb, I had a few people IM me and tell me that as well.
Thanks for the backup 1slowformula I appreciate it!

Actually, you could argue that a manifold is a bolt on. I know that you could argue just about anything is a bolt on, but to me "bolt on" means a stock long block, first and foremost. Yes, I know you can bolt a SC or nitrous to a stock long block, but that's just being silly.
