Using dish soap to wash car?

Does anyone do this regularly, I'm sure its not too good for the car?

I used it the other day because I was out of car wash soap and the closest store is an easy 30 mins away. That day I got complements on how it looked from 3 different people who see my car regularly, one thought I waxed it. I also think it looks better than usual, but I doubt I will use it again unless I'm desperate. Just curious if anyone else has had similiar results, I just wish I could afford Zaino products.

Dish soap will strip all wax and grease off your car. It is not good to use too much because it leaves the surface somewhat unprotected.

If you can't afford Zaino try Meguire's Gold Class or bum some Zaino from one of your buddies. I'll let the exprets chime in now.

If you can't afford Zaino, then buy something else. Hell, Turtle Wax is better than bare, unwaxed (or un-Zainoed ) paint.

Dishwashing soap is meant to be a degreaser. Look at the bottles in the store next time..."Cuts through grease easily!". You won't see many bottles that say, "Cleans the dirt off gently, but leaves grease on!"

My friends father has a BMW 5-series. He loves the clean and wax that thing. After he waxes it, it looks so good. Guess what he uses to wash his car next time? Dishwashing soap Yup, all that work down the drain I should tell him about using a carwash specific soap one of these days

Before most car shows I wash my car 3 times within a 2 week period. ALL 3 times I use dawn detergent to wash it. This is because it strips the old wax off and all the grease. So after 2 or 3 washes I'm pretty convinced I got all the old wax and grease off so I clean it extremely well after the 3rd wash and then I put a nice layer of wax on it. It really brings out the artic white shine again and you can easily tell I just waxed it. Its beautiful man, no doubt. I've done this for maybe a year or two and it really does bring back the attention. I do it twice a year. Once at the beginning of the year (around this time) and near the end of the show season (for winter purposes).

As said many times above dishwashing soap will strip 99% of the waxes and polishes on the market, your car looked so good because you stripped all the yellowish wax off your car, you can really see the difference on a light color car when you do this. Dishwashing soaps have a high alkaline content which cuts right thru carnauba wax, paraffin, silicone oils, etc, car wash soaps have a lower alkaline content that will not strip waxes.

I have had my car now for about 8 months, waxed it twice. Never washed it with anything but car wash soap. I decided today would be the day I would use Dawn and strip the old wax off. Yes, sure made the car look better without all the old wax on her. Of course I waxed her afterwards, not gonna leave her unprotected. I'm glad I did it cause it sure made the difference. Not gonna do it all the time though.
