Have I been drinking too much or what?

Hi Guys,

I'm in the final stages of finishing up the 350 I've been building.

The water pump I used was off a ZZ4 motor, this I'm told is the long style water pump. So I figured, no big deal, picked up an alternator and a alternator bracket set for the long style water pump.

I bolt on the lower bracket, then I am about to bolt on the upper style bracket and I soon find it doesn't look like the thing fits. The bolt hole on the waterpump, (that I assume the thing must go on), puts it too far back on the mantifold. The closest bolt is the bolt on the thermo housing, and thats still maybe a centimeter off...I'm running the edelbrock performer mantifold if that makes any difference.

The oddball thing, is I'm having more trouble with this stuff that putting the block together...

Anybody know what my problem is?

Thanks,
Will

The top bracket bolts into a hole in the front of the intake. http://store.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/edl-7101.jpg Like that. The hole in front of the intake. I believe there are other brackets to use if you do not have that hole.

I see...

I can bolt the top part of the bracket in there, but then where does the other part of the bracket bolt in? It sort of lines up with the hole in the waterpump, should it be flush against it or should it have some space between the bracket and the bolt hole?

Thanks again,
Will

Ya the other hole goes to the tab on the waterpump with no spacers in between. You are sure you have a long waterpump? I think your right though, that the ZZ4 come with LWP. On the top centre of the water pump is there a hole that youve had to plug? That hole is only on short water pumps (pretty sure anyhow).

When I got my Weiand intake manifold, the upper alternator bracket no longer lined up with the hole on the manifold. I simply left that bolt out as a temporary fix, but it seemed to be fine so it's still like that. :D Still, it would probably be best if it attached properly.

I've done many, many of these swaps and this has always been a problem area. The critical thing is to get the pulleys lined up. It often takes some washers or spacers ( I have a bucket full I've collected over the years) behind the bracket and alternator mount bolts. As for the manifold bolt I've done everything from slotting the hole to cutting off the tab and fabricating my own brace. Good Luck!

You know, I have a Weiand intake on my 350 and I can't get a normal alternator bracket to line up either. Right now I'm using one of those generic arms with a big ol', "cut to fit," bracket spacer. Pretty ghetto, huh?
