TurboCharger Idea

I just had an idea of putting a small turbo, say from an eclipse or something on the end of my slp shorty drivers side header and running the piping to the rest of the components, like exhaust, air filter, intake manifold. Without changing anything else like fuel pump, fuel injectors and without adding a wastegate and BOV will this work? What will I need to make this work...any ideas? Thanks for any help and please no flaming my idea even if it might not be the smartest idea.

Wouldn't even be worth the effort with that turbo since they will only support around 300hp. It would be a bottleneck if anything. You'd need one on each header before it would become viable and then you start running into piping/space limitations with a 4th gen.

And it has to be higher than the oilpan since they need to drain, or you get into scavenge pumps.

Oh ok...I see how that works but say if I was to get a turbocharger that supported 400+ horsepower and just threw it in, would that work? I thought turbochargers just provided compressed air which is forced into the intake to provide more power? So if a small turbo made a certain amount of boost say 12 psi, would that be the same amount of power on a larger turbo which provided the same amount of boost, 12 psi?

The problem is that, if you set it up correctly, all the air the engine gets is supposed to go through the turbo. It is not simply 12psi the turbo is providing, it is volume. The Eclipse runs 12psi because its volumetric demands are much less than your 5.7L sbc. The small turbo would simply not be capable of supporting the air you need to make the 400hp. The advantage is that you would make a lot of power early, but it would taper and fall off.

The larger turbo might work, but why not go with a serious turbo like the ones off of the dodge diesel pickups?

Oooh...didn't think about diesel turbochargers...those are pretty big. I just didn't want to put out 5000+ dollars for a kit when I might be able to just put one together especially since my friend has a welding shop. The whole idea of me asking this is if it is feasable.

Are there any pics of a good setup or some guides available. I still don't know where the wastegate/BOV go on a turbocharger setup. I know the wastegate diverts air away so it runs less boost but not sure what brand to buy and where it goes. Thanks for all the good info...I'm learning alot here.

If your really interested i would pick up a book on turbocharging. I have been told that 21st Century Turbo by **** Ditson has alot of good info on home built turbo set ups.
