Question Descreened MAF?

First of all, congratulate me on my first mod .... I put on a CAI this Friday after being stock for 9 years.

Putting it on, I noticed the screen on the MAF. Now I am noticing people's signatures as "descreened MAF". I read this site twice a day, and haven't seen to o much mentioned.

Obviously removing it provides less restrictive air flow. But is it worth doing? How do you take it off?

BTW: TB bypass next. I think I will be mod addicted now.

is it worht it...I dunno.
did i do it...yes.

Some people think its a bad idea, messing with the MAF. I agree it could be. But as long as you are carful, and dont knock the sensors around you should be ok. Im sure it smooths out the airflow...but not enough to matter. The reason i did it was to save weight

Is the screen actually on the MAS, or is it on the ends bolted to it? I descreened the ends on mine, it was one of the easiest things i have ever done. They just popped right off. They do nothing but restrict air so it can't hurt; but then again don't expect any major HP gain from that.

I would leave it alone. I went further and removed the center divider of the MAF, and that was a bit of trouble to tune with, and I still question wether it will read linearly ever again.

I was lucky to get a set of stock MAF ends for only $25, with screen and all. I think this is a free mod that just doesn't really have any real proven gains or advantage. TB bypass however, I'm fine with it but it doesn't get very cold here either.

Thanks all . I probably won't bother then. I've got plenty of other things on the car to work on

Well, I'm not going to go into detail here... but I will say this:

DO A SEARCH!!!!!

Not to be a di(k but every couple weeks this gets brought up.. almost as much as which shifter is the best for a M6 car...

I'd say about 2 weeks ago, maybe less there was a 4-5 page post about this that got into TONS of detail about whether or not to do it...

i had mine out, put it back in and ran my fastest time at the track... besides if GM thought it was necessary, then i'm leaving it in

I was told that it was there to quiet the air flow down.

The Granitelli(sp) MAS doesn't have a screen and it is considered to be one of the best ones that you can buy; thus, it can't be harmfull to take it off. Just because GM puts something on you car doesn't mean that it is beneficial. If that was true there would be no reason for aftermarket parts.

Hey fellas,
I descreened my MAF at the dyno and picked up 10rwhp. I've been told that you loose that new found HP because the OBII pcm will compensate for it over time.
I haven't dynoed the car since then, so I don't know if I lost it or not. But at any rate, it felt real good to get 10 rwhp by simply removing a screen
