New Opel GT based on Solstice to get V8

I found an article in a big german car magazine telling that there are plans bringing the Opel GT to market with a Cadillac XLR like Hardtop and a V8 (4.6 - 5.3 l). The GM people don´t want a foldable Hardtop and V8 for the sister cars Solstice and Bengal because of costs. But Opel insists on this layout. They say the car will do everything like BMW Z8 but is 60% cheaper. Price will be around 30-35 thousand Euros.

Well, at least this puts to rest that really dumb debate about the Solstice chassis being able to handle a powerful V8.

Opel wants to offer a V8 sports car, but Pontiac and Buick want to build 4 and 6-cylinders. Talk about twisted logic.

Can someone tell me why Opel is doing worlds ahead of GM North America? Look at their designs...

Also, they have a very nice Vauxhall and Speedster. Car weighs 1920 lbs, has 2.2L Ecotec engine producing 145 HP @ 5800 rpm and 150 lbs-ft @ 4000 rpm. Top speed over 130 mph and accelerates 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.

Why not design/sell this car here? I am certain it would be a worthy competitor to the likes of Miata/S2000.

The Speedster isn't an Opel, but just a rebodied and reengined Lotus Elise. The car might eventually be sold here as a Lotus, but the ultra-lightweight design would have to be substantially modified to meet saftety standards - so much so that it would lose most of its appeal.

The Lotus Elise will be sold in US starting next Apr or June costing around 38k. Opel just announced a turbo speedster 0-60 4.9 seconds available soon in Europe. The current speedster will stop production before their new sports car is released (Opel has already stated this). From what I have read the front end of the speedster wouldnt meet US crash standards. Then there is the issue of where would you build it, since gm currently has no US plants which produce alum chassis cars (since the demise of ev1). Also the plant in England has capacity of only 10k units, which I would guess will be making just Elises' eventually to meet demand for the entry into the US market. Definately a cool car, dont know how roomy they are inside though.

Read a review just a little while ago of the speedster. Said the car was an absolute sports car. Really tight fit, took a lot of work to drive, and was a hell of a lot of fun

AUTO picture preview

OPEL of new GT

Which for a return! OPEL has a new edition of the legendary GT in the pipeline. AUTO PICTURE knows, how it is to look.

At the end of January came Bob Lutz, with GM responsible for the world-wide product development, to a Zweitagesblitzvisite into the center of the German daughter OPEL to Ruesselsheim - and could in the Design center the newest version of a two-seat sports car be shown. This top secret project is to provide as wiedergeburt of the OPEL GT with us for sensation.

First however Lutz wants to give it to the English daughter Vauxhall to the hundred-year birthday. The Roadster Coupé is based on the Tubular in such a way specified component set, that in the USA for the Pontiac Solstice, which Buick Bengal and the Saturn Sky was conceived. The company line in the USA did not count however on the fact that OPELS and Vauxhall think just with this project more American than the Americans themselves. Because while Detroit wants to equip its cars with conventional four-cylinders, the European parliamentary group among the Mr. Burns and Forster wishes itself a V8.

Gary Cowger, which is responsible for the US business, brings the thing on the point: " In order to keep the budget framework, we placed a new, unusually versatile rear propulsion platform on the wheels. This matrix makes it for several GM divisions possible - under it also OPELS -, to take part in the project. Because we want to keep the price as close as possible by the 20.000-Dollar-Marke, the technicians concentrate on the four-cylinder. Also over a V6 I let talk with me, but the V8 is taboo. "

All further details to the new OPEL GT experience you in the new AUTO PICTURE , number 10/2003. Starting from Friday, 7 March 2003 , at the kiosk, at gas stations and in the magazine trade.

The same reason Holden is. GMNA is just way too big imo. Its like Peter in Office Space, no one does anything because if its wrong they have 4 bosses telling them they messed up, so they've no motivation to do anything!
