*HELP* LT1 to LS1 rear axle swap question

I just installed a 2001 rear out of a Firehawk on my 1996 Trans Am. We ran into a problem. I installed my old backing plates onto the new axle, then installed my stock rear brakes on to those same stock backing plates i have. Once we got it all back together took it for a spin around the block and could hear scraping noises coming from the rear. Went back and found that the rotors were rubbing on the caliper itself not the pad. It seemed as if the rotor went further onto the hub and therefore was rubbing on the caliper housings. What did you do to fix this? For now we put washers on the lug studsbehind the calipers and this seems like it will work I haven`t heard anymore noise but i still want to check the clearance.

Who has done this type of rear swap and what did you do to correct this problem?

If you use the LT1 brakes, you need to use the LT1 axles. The LS1 and LT1 axles are not the same length.

Unfortuanelty the LT! rear was a 2 series carriered rear, which i believe means the axles are 26 spline, the new rearLS1 is a 3 series carrier and I believe to be 28 spline. So I `m pretty sure my axles willl not work.

Is this going to cause a problem? Will the spacer work? is it safe as long as the brakes are not rubbing?

If I go to LS1 brakes will they work w\ my backing plates?

I did not think the splines were any different. The carrier series has nothing to do with the number of splines, AFAIK.
You would have to swap the complete LS1 brakes including backing plates, because it is all totally different. I can't say for sure if merely spacing them until it does not rub is ok. It depends on how much spacing and what is being used to space it.

Thanks Rob. I`ll pull the axles in the old rear and check them to see if they are 28, if so I will most likely use them. Will the bearings and everything else work off the ls1 w\ my lt1 axles?
