Best size for front door speakers?

The stock size is 5 1/4, but can't i put a 6 1/2 in with a new bracket? Or should i just put a better 5 1/4 in? Btw, i was thinking about just replacing that speaker, sh*tcanning the tweeter above it, and replacing it with one of those tweeter pods up near mirror height. Good idea, or replace both with component speakers?

Yes, replace both with a component set. Go as big as you can. That means a 6 ¾”. You may have to make a custom plate but that is cheap and easy (I got the idea from LS1Rules). I used 2 layers of ¼” particles board and a ½” spacer.

-Just cut the particleboard to the weird shape of the factory plate (cut it a little oversized then trim it).
-Make sure it sits flush with the door (like the factory one fits).
-It is a little tricky to drill the holes for the screws and have them match up, but all you need is a little patience.
-Then cut a hole in it to fit the speaker and add the necessary spacers (rings of ¼” particle board work). Make sure there is enough clearance in front such that the cone doesn’t hit the door, and make sure the window clears the back of the speaker.
-Use the factory screws and screw holes because they are reinforced the metal (fiber glass is hard to screw into). You can also buy metal clips (if the speakers don’t come with them) that can be used to reinforce any extra screw holes you make.
-The plates on both sides are mirror images of each other. So once you make the plate for one door, all you have to do is trace it and flip it over for the other side.
-Also, get a set of Foam or Plastic speaker baffles, to protect the back of the speaker form getting dripped on.

The 6 ½” ones will work, and you can buy them at your local car audio place. You only need one. Cut it in half and use one half on each side. Position them so they protect the top of the speaker, but the bottom is left open.

Good luck
