GM to wind down medium-duty trucks

I guess its going with "Old GM"? Wouldn't these trucks be profitable?

GM to wind down medium-duty trucks
DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (GMGMQ.PK) on Monday announced the following:

* Says will wind-down medium-duty truck production by July 31

* Says halting production of the Chevy Kodiak and GMC Topkick medium duty

trucks

* Says worked four years with multiple potential buyers for medium-duty truck

operations

They sell so few of these (and they seem to sell fewer every year), that I doubt they're profitable. But even if they were marginally profitable, I can't see GM spending the money to keep them updated, which means they'd just continue to lose more sales and they'd eventually have to kill them anyhow. So might as well do it now.

Weren't NAVISTAR and GM trying to work out a deal for these maybe a year ago? I know it fell through, but never heard why.

Just found this....

Navistar International Corp had been one of the potential buyers for the GM medium-duty truck operation. GM and Navistar had reached a tentative agreement on a sale, but the pact expired in August 2008 without a deal being reached.

I don't believe that ever got produced, at least not by GM. We're talking dump trucks and the like, Class 5 and 6.

They did. GM made them in a partnership with Monroe. You could order one right from your Chevy dealer:

Ironhide in the Transformers movies is a Topkick pickup, also - though I believe "he" may have been made especially for the movie.

I guess we're splitting hairs here, but GM does not build them even if they do sell them through their dealerships.

True, but GM was never slated to build them - and they did get produced - so yes, splitting hairs, but the truck in the picture did get produced.

Maybe they'll do like Ford and sell the medium truck operations, the engineer thier light truck operations to do essentially the same thing

(i.e. F-750, etc.)
