Gutting my 96

I have a 96 RS that I want to get going again. It has ~140K miles on it, leaks oil, and overheats (sludge in the cooling system). The car has been sitting for about 3 years.. so lines have rusted, seals are leaking. But the car is in good shape as far as appearance, no rust, paint is good, no dents, and convertible top is good. Summertime only car.

So here are some questions:

1. Should I just yank the motor and replace with a crate? Should I have mine rebuilt? I am not sure of the price difference between the two. If a crate is an more cost effective plan, does anyone know a reliable vendor? I am mechanically inclined so stripping down the motor and rebuilding it my self is an option.

2. Should I do the same with the transmission while I have everything out?

Any and all input (other than "Go buy a 2010!!") would be appreciated.

Go buy a '10 ;) J/K

Your plan sounds good,if your able to do the engine yourself go for it,if you want it back on the road quick a local reputable rebuilder may be the better option.

With 140m on the clock a rebuild of the tranny would be a good idea while you have it out.

Good luck with it:cool:
