A buddy of mine is looking to buy a '93 Trans Am. It has a factory Delco tape player and factory steering wheel controls. His question was if he changes out the tape player for a factory Delco CD player, will the steering wheel controls still work for the CD player? Thanks for your help.

Providing that the new CD deck had steering wheel controls to begin with it should work. Otherwise it's anybody's guess whether it will work or not. GM doesn't use entirely different wiring harnesses just because one car has steering wheel controls and another doesn't.

he'll be lucky if the steering wheel controls still work at all the 93 steering wheel controls were crap they broke like a couple monthes after they left the factory on most cars

Well Im not sure if it will work for a factory CD player. But if you do buy an aftermarket CD player there are interfaces that you can use that will allow you to use the factory steering controls on a new CD player. As far as the factory CD player I think the cable from the steering wheel plugs into the back of the deck so just look back there.

The steering wheel controls are on a single wire that is part of the main wiring harness of the factory HU.

For those of you with the 93 car, you can replace your controls if they don't work. 92-93 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi's use the same setup.....

AS for using a stock CD unit, you need to be sure it is a 93 unit. I am pretty sure they changed the button values when they went to the new controls. If the 94 still runs old controls, that would work, too.
