Talking First Confirmation of the NEXT GEN GTO!

The next gen GTO is evidently underway. For those of you who wanted a retro-GTO, and are disappointed with this one, seems you'll hate the next one as well.

"We didn't want retro because retro would be too easy," GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said of the new GTO. "We wanted to attract buyers who would consider German and Japanese rear-wheel-drive cars, so we wanted it to look contemporary."

To any skeptics who suggest the new GTO, which goes on sale this year, looks so little like the original because GM rushed it to market, Lutz said the next-generation GTO will ALSO be more modern.

Great news in my modern contemporary opinion. I hope it has more of an intimidating look though. The CavaGTO just isn't cutting it for me.

Great to hear. I hope this applies to certain other future cars as well!

While I'm n record as being slightly disappointed (but not turned off by) the GTO's look, it's not because of lack of retro, but because , IMO, it looks too much like a 97-03 Grand Prix.

Perhaps with a 'clean sheet' design (ie. not having to be a budget restyle of Monaro), and not being handcuffed by the already completed Monaro, it will be a bit more unique looking...

Any word on an expected Model Year for a "Next Gen" GTO? (Odd to be talking about this when the current one isnt even on sale yet. lol.)

Good news for us GM rear drive perf. fans, but pretty much seals the deal on the we-already-knew-that issue of the Firebird/Trans Am being permanently dead. Not only would such a car be a direct overlap of a GTO marketed at young buyers, but in the minds of GM brass, its probably to rednecky and carries to much of a crude connotation to be associated with the BMW fighter GM is trying to turn Pontiac into.

Scary thing is I worry the same about Camaro. Yes the name is like the second or third most recognizeable Chevrolet name, but does it carry too much of a negative connotation with both GM higher ups and the buying public to insert it into a lineup that GM is both trying to modernize and add a touch of class?

I think this is very good news because I bet that this attitude will apply to other models as well............................. future Camaro.

Remember that article I posted some time ago about the new plants comming up that will produce new engines and transmissions for GMs RWD cars in 2005, and high performance cars in 2006?

The new Holden VE line will be out in 2005 calender year (2006 model year).

Need more clues?

So they are going to import a bunch of holden cars. It's better than nothing. Good to hear and excellent that the GTO will stay away from retro.

All the talk about the GTO not replacing the F-bod was a bunch of bull ****. We have a RWD V8 car that will get a chevy twin in the future? And they come in at the same price as the out going SS and WS6.

The GTO is not being marketed to "young buyers". To a certain extent the F-body was never marketed at young buyers either as witnessed by the average age of the Camaro buyer being north of 40.

Sadly I do agree with you here. It seems that no one at Pontiac is interested in a new Firebird and my guess is mostly for that reason. At any rate they certainly don't have people fighting for Firebird like people at Chevy are fighting for Camaro right now.

Nah! That outta do it!

Interesting that this current GTO will be a 2-year only car... and limited quantities at that.... looks to be a modern day collectible.

I wonder if GM will even recoup the cost of the design and tooling for the Pontiac parts, even though there weren't a ton of changes...

Thumbs down

So it's going to look more like a Civic/BMW hybrid and less like an American musclecar. Bad news.

Holden put in most the money and have said they expect this export program to be profitable.

They are also trying to take advantage at the moment. See stories below.
